Dear Authors: Use this as an example…

This author has potential - she simply needs to observe and incorporate into her writing one of the primary things that elevates Peckham, Valenti, and a few other authors above the rest. It’s what takes a 3 star story to 4.5 or 5 star territory.

It is BALANCE - a balance between the actual action and inner dialogue.

The first two stories in this series are a perfect example of how an author can have a brilliant idea for a story and then smother it with gratuitous inner dialogue.

When a pivotal, long awaited confrontation is occurring, having each line of dialogue between characters and every single step in the action interrupted by a character’s thoughts - regardless of how poetic or profound they may seem to be - it’s akin to being in a car where someone slams on the brakes every 5 feet. In these big moments in a story, the only inner dialogue that should be written is that which is immediately essential to the forward momentum of the action.

The ability to shift writing styles according to the type of scene is where the truly exceptional authors seem to separate themselves from the rest. I hope this author catches on - she truly has potential.

I can’t believe this is Peckham and Valenti - they clearly improved before writing ZA and later series. I might not buy the next installment because the writing is getting annoyingly lazy. It’s impossible to feel anticipation or the thrill of suspense when the same exact dilemma occurs repeatedly w/out progress toward a solution. I really hope there’s some sort of progress and the monotony ends or I’m going to have to pass on the rest of the series.

In fairness, it may partly be due to binge listening. Listening to the same narrators performing work from the same author in mass quantity can be like listening to a song you love to the point it becomes monotonous.

But I do think the first stories had more creativity and at least an element of novel story telling.

In this one, the MFC should have been (and I believe the author intended to be) a character you sympathize with. But in spite of her circumstances the author had her make nonsensical, inexcusably hurtful decisions that made her unlikable and annoying - and I think it’s a cop out authors sometimes take to make the story fit the trope. Readers/listeners don’t like it much when an author clearly anticipates them seeing a character one way at the same time the character’s dialogue/actions conflict w/ the intended image. Especially when the author doesn’t eventually prove there was a reason the character tested their suspension of disbelief.

I really do like this series. My only criticism about this specific book is that the spicy bits get really campy and make the characters less impressive. On one hand this isn’t a deal breaker for me b/c I don’t really care about that part. I tend to get annoyed when authors gratuitously inject non-stop book porn into stories that could legitimately stand on their own w/out it - as if they don’t actually have confidence in their own story telling.

But in this case, the behaviors and dialogue of the main characters when it comes to the racy stuff made them a little ridiculous.

I fell out of interest somewhere in the middle of this. It is boring.

It became just a never ending stream of inner dialogue and very little actual story.

I first want to give props for the intuitive depiction of a person who is “neurodivergent” - and that’s a sincere compliment from someone w/ over three decades diagnosing and treating individuals of all ages w/ autism.

The writing is a bit sophomoric and the narration - albeit good - is not quite at the level of, say, AndI Arndt or Zachary Webber.

But there is enough here to make me want to continue listening.

It’s very easy to lose yourself in Jackson’s storytelling. It’s very, very good. She has an outstanding mastery of descriptive vocabulary.

The only critique I have - and it’s admittedly strange - is that she sometimes undermines her legitimately stellar ability to paint a mental image w/ her words by doing too much describing. She frequently gets caught up in an oddly redundant pattern of using an adjective/adverb/verb followed w/ a set of three synonymous terms and then a simile or metaphor (e.g. “She was sinking - worn, beleaguered, exhausted. Like the setting sun melting into the horizon…”), and she does this repeatedly to the point it becomes strangely monotonous. This is especially noticeable during action scenes where there’s a paragraph of this between each step a character takes.

That’s just my opinion, and even with this her writing is outstanding. I’m just thinking about her potential to be one of the best authors in the genre and tweaking this one thing might put her stories in the 4.75 to 5/5 star range for me.

I liked this. I wasn’t a fan of the female narrator - her voice was bland with the exception of a few highly emotional scenes where she actually was compelling.

Not my favorite Corinne Michaels’ book, but nonetheless an enjoyable listen. Good enough to continue with second book in the Ember Falks series.

I don’t think the author truly knew where this was going as she wrote this story. It’s unbalanced and so over the top it becomes a chore to listen to.

The dark matter in previous stories was icky but not impossible to toss aside because the mystery and creative backstory was strong. In this it’s just gross and gratuitous with nothing to justify sticking it out. I regret the effort.
