Historia
Eveline Armstrong is fiercely loved and protected by her powerful clan, but outsiders consider her "touched." Beautiful, fey, with a level, intent gaze, she doesn't speak. No one, not even her family, knows that she cannot hear. Content with her life of seclusion, Eveline has taught herself to read lips and allows the outside world to view her as daft. But when an arranged marriage into a rival clan makes Graeme Montgomery her husband, Eveline accepts her duty -unprepared for the delights to come.

Great love affair
Revisado: 04-29-25
Well written. Plot, language, characterizations, world building and more made listening to this book pleasurable. It’s not a book I would sit down and listen to again after finishing it, but I would in a year or two. I easily predicted the ending, but even if I had strong beliefs of what was going to happen, I still really enjoyed the story as it unfolded. I think the characters were so well drawn, that it made the blossoming of love inspirational.
None of my pet peeves were even brought out of the chest.
Ms Potter has a great voice. I often follow my favorite performers (rather than writers) and will be adding her to my favorites.

Use his new abilities to hunt down demonic beings that have infiltrated the mortal realm. This time, the White Throne has sent him to the middle of nowhere: a Western town called Dead Acre with a saloon, a moldy church, and little else worth talking about. There isn’t even a sheriff.

Great and concise, gritty language
Revisado: 04-27-25
Really enjoyed this book. It was short, but not too short that something was lacking, and well worth the time. The writers, Bruno & Castle, definitely hooked and impressed me. Language, tone, mood, characterization and world building were on point. I’ll definitely continue with the series!
Roger Clark’s deep, resonant voice fits with the grittiness of the story.

All the delicious metaphors…..
Revisado: 04-27-25
One of the best writers I’ve read/listened to in a long time—which has me rethinking my star-review-rating strategy. This is the second excellent book by Ms Long, making me realize I can trust her with my time and know I am better for it. The metaphors are so delicious and on point you’re never kicked out of the story. Loved the MMC and FMC, plus all side characters. The dialogue is really SMART(!) as is the plot, and both are filled with yummy tension. The World Building is lush. I can’t stop thinking or saying delicious. I could easily listen to this book again. Just, WOW! I save books I like under Favorites, and now I need another strategy for that—should I call it my Favorite Favorites?
As usual, Justine Eyre gives perfect voice to each character. Her narration is always reliable and adds another dimension to this wonderful book.

Enjoyed the storyline, but wish this book was first.
Revisado: 04-22-25
First off, everything I enjoyed and reviewed in the first book, I enjoyed in this one too, so I won’t repeat myself. So few series books ever meet the quality of the first book, where you typically get hooked with the character or a story line. For me this story is as lovingly written as the first one and I enjoyed both performer and writer.
Maybe I’m wrong, but it feels like the storyline happened before the first book, but maybe I’m wrong. Granted, I enjoyed the first book more, but this book was great. I feel like I really got an interesting sense of the acting world and famous people in it, and their trials and tribulations. I found the details of location and clothing added substance. The problem these three women faced had real substance.
I really missed seeing the three women meet up again at the end of the story. The HEA‘s were there—for each of the characters, I just wanted to revisit the group of women who supported one another initially. I also would have liked to experience more dynamics on set. I think it might have added another layer to the story like art did in the first book. I hope there is more in this series to come!

Just loved this book
Revisado: 04-19-25
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Can you hear me;I’m still clapping. And I’ll be adding this author as one of my favorites. I found the story under RomCom, but it was more Heartfelt with bits of RomCom.
The story was sweet, tender, tear jerking in the right way, with an HEA for all at the end. I loved the art tie-in. Great metaphors, characterizations, descriptions and use of language. And the book doesn’t suffer from any of my pet peeves. Even though it’s a modern story, I felt like I was reading historical fiction.
I listen to a lot of books in all genres and was surprised so see the rating was lower than a poorly written book in Romantasy that might have a 4.6 rating. Something’s just wrong with that.
The loveliness of the narrator matched the loveliness of the writing, with distinctive voices for everyone. Well done!

All the trappings of good book
Revisado: 04-14-25
Fell asleep too much while listening (even while standing, which was a first for me), and stopped when 3/4 way through Ch 8. After resting, I went back to CH 4, and replayed from there.
The setup worked, world building was very dense, interesting and thorough, MMC development had promise, the writing was far better than a lot of authors to whom I have listened.
The challenge for me was that the front-end had lots of information and no action. There were many new countries and histories, science and technologies, new political structures, plus lots of names. There were many coffees or drinks/dinners with girlfriend and for me, no sense of danger or urgency, or that the story would acquire any. I found the urgency at about ch 21, with 4 hrs or so left.
I don’t know if it was the information-load that made it hard to hear and sense feelings from the MMC, but it took a while for me to understand that I was listening to a sci-fi, spy thriller and that the MMC was freaking out. After the four memos (no spoiler alert), I just went WOW. This was a very smart story. The MMC does not disappoint. After I became used to the world, staying in this world for two more books won’t be as hard.
I found this author because of the narrator, Tim Campbell. It’s my current goal to listen to the entire catalog of stories he’s narrated., no matter the genre. What an amazing voice.

Ugh! I can’t believe I read another in this series
Revisado: 04-14-25
For me the story was more about two people stuck on an island. Lots and lots of psycho-babble. Lots of sexual tension. Toward the end, Heroine does something predictably stupid, putting MMC & FMC in obvious peril. Things work out.
Having listened tho the first book, I feel like the writing improved, but not the plot structure nor the dependence upon characters doing something stupid to move the plot along.

Hits all the right notes.
Revisado: 04-09-25
I can never fully tell with listening, but the writing seemed well done. Location, history, characters, and plot were on point; organic and well put together. The bedroom sizzles in the best way. I was never kicked out of the story because of writing issues. But the biggest clue to a well written story for me is wishing I had a little more time with the characters in a lengthy novel-length epilogue (haha)! I’ve already put Ms McCollum on my wish list.
“The Beast…” did not push any of my negative buttons: which are: history that happens somewhere offscreen; or a genre masquerading as historical romance when it’s just a slow strip tease; or loaded with short-cut emotions (basically telling instead of showing emotion); Characters behaving stupidly because the plot depends on it, The previous book I read suffered from all the above, but “The Beast…”did not.

Not my cuppa tea
Revisado: 04-07-25
98% history is behind the scenes. 98% of action is off screen. This book feels like the setup for a story line that is about sexual tension and forced emotional misunderstandings between mmc and fmc. As a listener, I felt manipulated rather than rewarded.

Historia
In a quiet small town in New Brunswick, old Agatha Treadway makes one last cranky complaint to her niece before dying on her kitchen floor. The cause seems to be a jar of contaminated string beans, which sat on Agatha's basement shelf for years before becoming her final meal. The town doctor calls it a tragic accident - and a warning to all who can their own vegetables - but Agatha's neighbor, the intrepid Janet Wadman, knows better. Agatha was an expert canner, which means the beans must have been placed there by someone else. This was murder.

Most of this story is from Janet’s POV but the male narrator made everyone sound doddering and old. I was surprised to find that Janet was only 21. Story may be better when read.
