Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

beautiful and impossible to put down
Revisado: 07-28-19
Such a striking voice, stunning prose, and a protagonist I fell in love with. I also loved how organic the biology was to the plot, her thinking, the imagery. Finally, the crime fiction aspect was superbly crafted.. with a great final twist.

fantastic finish

I'm impressed how Jemisin could raise the stakes and scope of each book, even after I thought nothing could beat the previous one(s). Also, great twist at the end!

Even better than book one!
Revisado: 06-30-19
Sometimes when a second book has a new protagonist I worry I won't be as enamored, but I was immediately drawn into Oree's story, this new view of the world, and the twists and turns of this smart, surprising plot. So excited to read the third! Oh, and the narrator is fantastic.

magical in all senses
Revisado: 02-27-19
such an original, imaginative piece, driven as much by character and setting as it is by plot. I was riveted at every out turn, at every character revelation. I also love this powerful feminist retelling of the old fairy tale.

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

beautiful
Revisado: 01-11-18
a dazzling cast of characters and set in an equally dazzling world. I was wondering what stiefvater would do after the raven cycle, and was taken in by this new direction. she has clearly studied the Latin American magic realist tradition, and writes her own version of it beautifully with this book. her narrator is a delight (I mean the book's, even though Thom Rivera is also a pleasure to listen to), with apt insights and lyrical language. and her characters, despite the large cast, are satisfyingly real, even with their mystical abilities and living amid the fantastical, living landscape.
