Historia
Who invented reality television, the world’s most dangerous pop-culture genre? And why can’t we look away? In this revelatory, deeply reported account of the rise of “dirty documentary”—from its contentious roots in radio to the ascent of Donald Trump—Emily Nussbaum unearths the origin story of the genre that ate the world, as told through the lively voices of the people who built it. At once gimlet-eyed and empathetic, Cue the Sun! explores the morally charged, funny, and sometimes tragic consequences of the hunt for something real inside something fake.

Some insights but…
Revisado: 08-05-24
The tale gets as sordid as reality shows enter the era of Survivor. That particular chapter is never ending but the one about Big. Brother is so troubling. The author makes a weak argument about The Apprentice and reality shows affecting politics. Lots of interviews and research, but the performance leaves much to be desired. Glad to be done.

Tremendous production of gripping history
Revisado: 03-10-21
I only learned about the siege of Leningrad when I visited there about ten years ago. It was shocking to visit the memorial and learn that so many people perished from German rapacity and Soviet incompetence. Anna Reid has written this book with a master storyteller’s great sense of pacing and a historian’s respect for research. Peter Drew’s voice talent is superbly well matched to her great skills.

Even better the second time, then the third
Revisado: 04-07-15
If I recall correctly Audible recommended this book for me after I heard Half of a Yellow Sun. I am so glad! I play books to entertain my models as I paint, and every one of them has enjoyed the book. This time through I was more aware of the artistry Robin Miles brings to the recording. The many accents and attitudes she portrays do justice to the author's blend of humor and pathos. It is a great great book.

Great way to revisit this account
Revisado: 11-12-12
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Having read this book the first time in college decades ago, I found listening to this highly satisfying. The narrative that William Shirer wrote lends itself so well to the audio format, perhaps because he was himself a radio reporter. It is chilling to consider how much of Hitler's rise to power that Shirer saw firsthand, and his use of the Nuremberg archives to piece together the whole horrendous tale is masterful. He and the narrator explain the seemingly inexplicable: how a combination of distraction, seduction and domination so led the German people to acclaim "that corporal from Austria" as their Furher.
