The reading made this already weaker story difficult. The voicing on almost each character was that of a whiney mentally handicapped child. The main protagonist is represented inconsistently throughout. I hope for a better representation in the future.

The story itself is weak . I’d argue that the hunger games original trio is weak but intriguing due to the horror of the setting and the cultural commentary. The original stories are full of holes. But they are overlooked by white knuckle emotion. This new offering threatens to expose the shoddy storyline by trying to offer historical explanation. It doesn’t succeed very well. For insufficient motivation we see the protagonist go from a likeable kid to the monster that we know from the original stories. He does this by going through the same life and love challenges that plague every normal non-monstrous human being.

Many will be entertained by the story. As a pop culture novel it isn’t bad. But it fails in the areas where the original books managed to pull through.

And with such a high budget publishing deal and movie deal....for the love of god please atleast give us a prepared reader!

Good story. Details can get bogged in this book since it’s a collection of notes and not a completed novel. But great for LOTR enthusiasts. Reading was good but a little dramatic and god-like at times. Still I suppose that fits the tone of some of the text.

I was familiar with the narrator from The Count of Monte Cristo and he does a terrific job of separating characters through voices. Having seen the Broadway show many times I wanted a better look at this classic story. What a beautiful dark and haunting story! Definitely recommend to anyone interested in a classic thriller mystery style read.

Was awesome to hear Waylon tell his own story. I had wished the story was longer, felt like Waylon could have shared some more details. But I really enjoyed listening to this, and learned a lot about Waylon and the music culture that he lived in.

I was surprised at how good of a narrator Willie was, his voice sounds natural and enjoyable to listen to. And of course he is a great storyteller. I thoroughly enjoyed his book and grew an even deeper appreciation for his contribution to music.

I pulled this audiobook off the proverbial bookshelf because I wanted to learn more about the mysterious Texas icon, Townes Van Zandt. Being a songwriter myself, there was much to his story that was relatable to me, both as an inspiration and a cautionary tale. I respected the author's portrayal of Mr. Van Zandt in his truthful presentation of Townes as a genius and revolutionary songwriter and performer, but also an honest telling of the man's obvious flaws and shortcomings, which ultimately resulted in his shortened life.

There were parts of the author's reading that I found irritating. He chooses to distinguish the quotations in the book by narrating with an accent, but misses the mark by consistently sounding like a southerner rather than a Texan. Small annoyance yes, but it messed with my imagery to hear Townes Van Zandt portrayed sounding like a farmer from Alabama, rather than a Texas boy. Interestingly the accent improved in the later chapters of the book.

Good story, good writing, and well told. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in music, songwriting, Texas music history, and The Late Great Townes Van Zandt.
