Historia
Ruth Wariner was the 39th of her father's 42 children. Growing up on a farm in rural Mexico, where authorities turned a blind eye to the practices of her community, Ruth lives in a ramshackle house without indoor plumbing or electricity. At church, preachers teach that God will punish the wicked by destroying the world and that women can ascend to heaven only by entering into polygamous marriages and giving birth to as many children as possible.

Excellent story, told with realness
Revisado: 02-03-25
I read it in one sitting, it was captivating and real and drew me in. Not that long ago and not that far away there were people who really struggled to get by daily. The mix of religion, determinations and challenges and how it played out in actuality is like they say "captivating"

Historia
Fourteen-year-old Gary, a self-described "tree toad" (lover of a perfect lawn, the soft-porn masterpiece of Carnal Cuties, his Underwood typewriter, and, above all, his rebellious cousin Kate), lives through one amazing Lake Wobegon summer. Gary preoccupies himself by spinning fantastic yarns about boogers, talking dogs, conversations between God and Jesus, and especially melodramas featuring himself as hero and Kate as distresseddamsel.

This was another of his books and expected the usual entertaining and light content. It started off fine but before long every story covered his sexual longings with great details... got tired of it- went on to some other story with less of his wet dreams.

Not for me
Revisado: 12-27-24
it starts off intriguing and pulls you in.... but then it is so drawn out, maximizing the pain and the confusion and the agony to a ridiculous degree. Lots of gore and more .... I guess if you have nothing else to read, but I thought it overblown.

Historia
Alone with her new husband on a tiny Pacific atoll, a young woman, combing the beach, finds an odd aluminum container washed up out of the lagoon, and beside it on the sand something glitters: a gold tooth in a scorched human skull. The investigation that follows uncovers an extraordinarily complex and puzzling true-crime story. Only Vincent Bugliosi, who recounted his successful prosecution of mass murderer Charles Manson in the best seller Helter Skelter, was able to draw together the hundreds of conflicting details of the mystery and reconstruct what really happened....

too late realized this is a 28 hr story that seems to go on forever with not that much substance.... and I am only 3 hours in, just too much to contemplate to carry on. I think I will call it a day.

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Historia
Her name is Alicia. She was 13 when she began saving the lives of people she did not know - while fleeing the Nazis through war-ravaged Poland. Her family cruelly wrenched from her, Alicia rescued other Jews from the Gestapo, led them to safe hideouts, and lent them her courage and hope. Even the sight of her mother’s brutal murder could not quash this remarkable child’s faith in human goodness - or her determination to prevail against overwhelming odds. After the war, Alicia continued to risk her life, leading Polish Jews on an underground route to freedom in Palestine.

Historia
Howard Storm, an avowed atheist, was awaiting emergency surgery when he realized that he was at death's door. Storm found himself out of his own body, looking down on the hospital room scene below. Next, rather than going "toward the light", he found himself being torturously dragged to excruciating realms of darkness and death, where he was physically assaulted by monstrous beings of evil. His description of his pure terror and torture is unnerving in its utter originality and convincing detail.

Disappointment
Revisado: 10-13-23
While this book promises to speak to his experience of a short time in afterlife & what it showed him, it does to some degree. However, it soon veers off into o monologue all that is wrong with the world and his opinions about that. Basically preaching how own version of what he thinks of the world and how it can heal itself.
I turned it off at some point, it was just way over the top & came across like a Sunday sermon

Quite a disappointment
Revisado: 09-23-23
I expected a book about people and their experience in therapy, kind of like the opening part.Instead she goes on to talk about Therapy, statistics on therapy, I simply had to turn it off... so full of "good advice" and on what one should do, full of herself.
I love reading about therapy, how things evolve, what we take away from it, the insights.
This book gives you non of that. A total misnomer. Should be called " Good advice I have heard & read about and now want to tell you about therapy in the most general of ways"
Truly, a diatribe - I was looking forward to it and it was quite a disappointment.

Historia
In 1986, Paul Newman and his closest friend, screenwriter Stewart Stern, began an extraordinary project. Stuart was to compile an oral history, to have Newman’s family and friends and those who worked closely with him, talk about the actor’s life. And then Newman would work with Stewart and give his side of the story. The only stipulation was that anyone who spoke on the record had to be completely honest. The result is The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man—revelatory and introspective, personal and analytical, loving and tender in places, always complex and profound.

But it is overload on details, floors, doctor, patients, helicopters
