Historia
When two bombs exploded at the densely crowded finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, the whole world watched in shock as the story unfolded. First, the death toll and life-altering injuries. Next, the identification of the suspects - Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev - and the tense manhunt that brought Boston to a standstill. And, finally, the courageous and inspiring recovery of a wounded American city. Long Mile Home is the riveting tale of that tragic, surreal, and ultimately inspiring week.

A moving and comprehensive account of a very dark time in Boston
Revisado: 03-22-25
This listen offers everything I ask for from an audiobook: a very moving story of human persistence in the face of terrible adversity and narration that respects the source material.

Lots and lots of graphic sex
Revisado: 03-06-25
After I listened to the first 45 minutes (~7 very graphic descriptions of sexual intercourse), I pulled up the description of the novel, sure I had missed something. I had not. It's described as thriller suspense and psychological. I mean, it might be, but any suspense that might be there is so overwhelmed by a veritable Kama Sutra that I failed to feel it. The narration is ok, if you like listening to the noises other people make while they're having sex. I cannot comment on the storyline because it too is drowned out. In all fairness, I think the description should have at least mentioned the graphic nature of the narrative. It was the daily deal, so I won't be getting my $5.99 plus tax back. All in all, a real turn off.

I should have heeded reviews of the narration
Revisado: 02-12-23
I bought this book as a daily deal, so there is no hope of a refund. I should have trusted the many reviewers who found the hyperbolic valley girl inflection of the narrator...irritating. For me, it was a verbal assault. I would go as far as to argue that the narration disrespects the book, sorority sisters, and, maybe, women in general. I have learned my lesson.

Condescending voicing of female characters
Revisado: 11-10-22
I am a fan of the Lynley series in all its forms. I enjoyed reading the books, watching the tv series and, until now, listening to the audiobooks. George's novels are long, sprawling works, perfect for long walks. I thoroughly enjoyed earlier narrators, especially Davina Porter (who wouldn't?). But John Lee offends my ears in myriad ways. His exaggeratedly theatrical delivery quickly becomes grating. His voicing of female characters, especially the beloved DS Havers, is so, so condescending that I sometimes fast-forwarded. I am relieved to see that Simon Vance voices the next few novels.

Historia
In 1885 Jane and Leland Stanford cofounded a university to honor their recently deceased young son. After her husband's death in 1893, Jane Stanford, a devoted spiritualist who expected the university to inculcate her values, steered Stanford into eccentricity and public controversy for more than a decade. In 1905 she was murdered in Hawaii, a victim, according to the Honolulu coroner's jury, of strychnine poisoning.

Impenetrable institutional intrigue and infighting
Revisado: 09-14-22
I bought this title because I am an academic who loves academic satire (this is NOT academic satire) and because I enjoy tightly focused history. But both the book and the narration rendered this (should be interesting) story impenetrable. The narrative gets badly lost in the weeds, and the narration is uninspired and flat. I tried hard to stick it out, but I gave up at less than halfway through.

Overwritten and over-narrated
Revisado: 08-23-22
The first novel in the series was ok, but this second installment is flawed in a few ways. The early passages are very confusing and unengaging. The story itself suffers from way too much telling and not enough showing. The author takes three or four sentences to make a point that could be conveyed in a phrase. Other reviews of novel one described the melodramatic, breathy narrator. She didn't bother me too much in the first novel, but her reading is unbearable in this one.

Historia
A single mother turns up dead at the bottom of the river that runs through town. Earlier in the summer, a vulnerable teenage girl met the same fate. They are not the first women lost to these dark waters, but their deaths disturb the river and its history, dredging up secrets long submerged. Left behind is a lonely 15-year-old girl. Parentless and friendless, she now finds herself in the care of her mother's sister, a fearful stranger who has been dragged back to the place she deliberately ran from - a place to which she vowed she'd never return.

Historia
Bodily Harm opens with a big win for Sloane and his new partner, Tom Pendergrass, in a medical malpractice case centered on the death of a child. But on the heels of this seeming victory, an unlikely character – toy designer Kyle Horgan – comes forward to tell Sloane that he’s gotten it all wrong. Horgan’s the one who’s truly responsible for the little boy’s death and others – not the pediatrician Sloane has just proven guilty.

Altogether too sappy for me
Revisado: 08-05-21
I celebrate a healthy alternative to the hard-boiled, self-destructive legal eagle, but the family scenes in this novel (performed by this narrator) are cringe-worthy. I had a hard time believing that the writer who penned this novel also wrote the Tracy Crosswhite series (which I quite enjoy). Just not my cup of tea. Returning after the first 10 minutes.
