Engaging Historical Novella of the Aftermath of Kings Mountain
Revisado: 11-27-24
I read this story some years ago when it was part of a Christmas novella collection, but enjoyed listening to it as a standalone. As an NC resident who loves history, I enjoyed the solid writing and charming story. It’s narrated with virtual voice, but so well done I could barely tell it was virtual.

Historia
Filled with bitter quarrels, reckless affairs, treacherous betrayals, relentless mercenaries, and courageous detectives, The Feud is the riveting story of two frontier families struggling for survival within the narrow confines of an unforgiving land. It is a formative American tale, and in it, we see the reflection of our own family bonds and the lengths to which we might go in order to defend our honor, our loyalties, and our livelihood.

An Uplifting End to a Tragic Tale
Revisado: 08-05-24
As the description says, “Drawing upon years of original research, including the discovery of previously lost and ignored documents and interviews with relatives of both families, bestselling author Dean King finally gives us the full, unvarnished tale” of the feud. It was tough to listen to at times, but the book ended on an uplifting and positive note that I couldn’t possibly have expected.

International Intrigue with a Splash of Magnolia
Revisado: 10-17-16
Would you consider the audio edition of Two from Isaac's House to be better than the print version?
I enjoy reading, but I'm often crunched for time. Both the print and the audio are fine works, but the audio version came in handy on this occasion. I listened to it while driving to and from work.
What did you like best about this story?
Nice tension and conflict in a well-crafted story about a southern woman who visits Italy and gets caught up in international intrigue.
Any additional comments?
Normandie Fischer delivers yet another well-written novel with Two from Isaac's House, successfully blending an international story with a touch of southern fiction. Brandon Potter did an excellent job narrating the story and the various accents and languages within. Well done!

Historia
One of the first personal narratives written by an ex-slave, this is also one of the few written by a woman. Harriet Jacobs (1813-97) was enslaved, along with her family, in North Carolina under a ruthless master who sexually harassed her. After several failed escape attempts, and several years of hiding, she finally made her way North to freedom, where she was eventually reunited with her children. The book was published in 1861.

Gripping
Revisado: 07-01-16
Well-written, surprisingly balanced account of the life of a woman who lived under, and escaped, the bondage of slavery. A best-selling suspense novel could not have been more gripping. Though I knew the outcome before reading, there were times I was on the edge of my seat as I read or listened to the audio version.
Every lover of history should read this, as should every women sexually harassed or emotionally abused by a narcissist. There is wisdom in these pages that transcends time.

Historia
Nearly 20 years before Jamestown was settled, the English established one of the earliest colonies in North America around the Chesapeake Bay region, until the colony had over 100 inhabitants. Like other early settlements, Roanoke struggled to survive in its infancy, to the extent that the colony's leader, John White, sailed back to England in 1587 in an effort to bring more supplies and help. However, the attempts to bring back supplies were thwarted by the Spanish in the midst of the Anglo-Spanish War going on at the time.

Omits Crucial Information
Revisado: 06-17-16
While the author provides an overview of events leading up to the disappearance of Raleigh's third expedition and second attempt to colonize the New World, crucial information connecting the dots is omitted. Examples include the fact that Spain was overtaking Europe at that time and England, likewise threatened, allowed Drake and others to engage in privateering in an effort to cut off the flow of gold from South America that funded Spain's tyrannical invasions. Also left out was the fact that White's colony was initially headed to Chesapeake, not Roanoke, but was abandoned there by their boat pilot.
The more one learns of this story, the more one learns there is much more to the events that led up to the colony's disappearance.
