Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Endurance started a little slow for me, but soon grabbed hold and didn’t let go. I am speechless after finishing this book. The men and their story of unfathomable suffering and perseverance will stay with me for a very long time.

Historia
C. S. Lewis's dazzling allegory about Heaven and Hell - and the chasm fixed between them - is one of his most brilliantly imaginative tales, where we discover that the gates of Hell are locked from the inside. In a dream, the narrator boards a bus on a drizzly afternoon in Hell and embarks on an incredible voyage to Heaven. Anyone in Hell is invited on board, and anyone may remain in Heaven if he or she so chooses. But do we really want to live in Heaven?

Excellent.

So much to ponder and understand. I think I’ll go back and read it now because I found myself rewinding and pausing the narration to think about all of the symbolism and detail.

Historia
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Insanely political
Revisado: 12-23-23
The Four Winds is monotonously depressing and is promoting communism without acknowledging what communism is. Hannah makes communists seem like very charitable people who just want to organize strikes. There’s no acknowledgement that communism takes away all private property. Which, in the book, would include Rose and Tony’s farm. The evil perpetrated in the name of Communism throughout history is completely ignored by the author and instead the big land owner is almost comically atrocious. Everything was so exaggerated and depressing that the novel lost credibility. I kept waiting for something good to happen and it never did.

Enjoyable easy read
Revisado: 07-12-22
The Hotel Nantucket is a fun summer novel that I mostly enjoyed. Hilderbrand’s descriptions of food, decor, fashion, and playlists bring the reader into each scene in a fresh way. I also liked getting a behind the scenes look into the hospitality world. My only complaints, which nearly made me stop halfway through, are the cringe-worthy attempts at capturing gen z lingo, and the political preaching annoyingly peppered throughout. However those never reached an intolerable level and I’m glad I stayed with it until the predictable but satisfying conclusion.

Historia
"Who am I becoming?" That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, he appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So, he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words: "Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life." It wasn’t the response he expected, but it was - and continues to be - the answer he needs. Within this audiobook, you’ll find a fascinating road map to staying emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.

I loved this book! Zach Anner is a delight! He is smart, articulate, inspirational, and truly hilarious. I listened to the book while I walked our neighborhood for exercise and found myself laughing out loud. I ended up going for longer walks because I was so entertained. I hope to attend one of his speaking engagements here in Austin in the future.
