Historia
If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

Revisado: 06-06-24
I really felt like Whoopi Goldberg stopped by to chat or that I was in the audience while she was performing stand-up. I loved hearing her voice narrate. I can't help but feel I need to see the book-- the words on the page. It was like having an hours-long conversation with a friend. Thank you, Whoopi Goldberg

Historia
Heather McGhee’s specialty is the American economy—and the mystery of why it so often fails the American public. From the financial crisis of 2008 to rising student debt to collapsing public infrastructure, she found a root problem: racism in our politics and policymaking. But not just in the most obvious indignities for people of color. Racism has costs for white people, too. It is the common denominator of our most vexing public problems, the core dysfunction of our democracy and constitutive of the spiritual and moral crises that grip us all.

This book is full of great detail and the research (both primary and secondary) of Heather McGhee. pure genius. The balance of the legal, political and economic viewpoints were masterful. This is definitely a book I'll share with my brilliant 15yo daughter... no need for her to wait to have this gem in her back pocket. Thank you Heather McGhee... you're one of my 2021 heroes.

A MUST READ
Revisado: 03-03-21
I exquisitely enjoyed this book (both print and audio). My 15 yo daughter finished ahead of me. young people are thirsty for this information. #400Souls is a first principle kind of material when it comes to getting a broader understanding of American History. I feel like I am finally scratching the surface of a meaningful understanding and context for America's original sin. Now my response to all of the 'isms' is anchored to a body of work that will allow me to explore further. Thank you Dr Kendi and Dr. Blain.

Excellent!
Revisado: 09-08-20
The narration was distracting when the author was obliviously making a point... but it caused me to smile as I could feel his passion. This was a brilliant treatment for the discussion of racism and anti racism. It is thorough, unrelenting and unapologetic about racism and capitalism- the twins. Loved it. I'm going to start a book club.

Historia
In August of 2014, 29-year-old activist DeRay Mckesson stood with hundreds of others on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, to push a message of justice and accountability. These protests, and others like them in cities across the country, resulted in the birth of the Black Lives Matter movement. Now, in his first book, Mckesson lays out the intellectual, pragmatic political framework for a new liberation movement. Continuing a conversation about activism and justice that embraces our nation's complex history, he dissects how deliberate oppression persists, and much more....

DeRay McKesson's voice is unique and his story is compelling. His arguments are clear and ring true to me on so many levels. He (and his vest) are doing the heavy lifting. The group of protestors in this movement are a force to be reckoned with and have forever made an impression on me. I am grateful for people who do more than watch. He is a truly a leader and voice I'll continue to listen for.

Revisado: 03-27-18
I really enjoyed hearing Jennifer as narrator. The story was good and advise to our future Madam President was sound. a great reminder of how this world was not built to suit women in the workplace or in elected office. Jennifer suggests that we proudly embrace who we are a rewrite the rules and assume responsibility for our collective future. No more blindsided losses, but win by being who you are. Also, it reminds me of how empowering it is to "run like a girl".
