Yes, there are elephants. But the story is less about communicating with wildlife and much more about our “hero” narrowly escaping various far-fetched life-threatening scenarios. He wins gunfights with poachers. He stares down Zulu assassins with a cocked pistol. He saves his wife from a raging wildfire. Then there’s deadly venomous snakes, lions, leopards, crocodiles, etc. Basically, it’s a bad Hollywood action film.

A compelling & historically accurate narrative of immigrant experience in early 1900’s Chicago. The final two chapters devolve into political preaching of socialism that detracts from the beauty & complexity of the rest of the story. The diatribe at the end is both boring and so hypocritically racist I’m amazed I made it through the whole book in middle school. I remembered the book as inspiring even. I guess the shameless propaganda and in-your-face racism went right over my head at the time. I recommend reading at a young age, skipping the last two chapters, or both.

I’ve read about and discussed the Vietnam war with many people, and I believe bias is impossible to avoid - it raises too many strong emotions. The strength of this book is that it draws on so many different sources and personal interviews. Many different voices and perspectives are presented. In my opinion, as a whole, I think it favors a North Vietnamese perspective. However, I also believe that the overall goal of the project (book & documentary) was to strive for impartiality. That is what makes this book absolutely worth reading.

This is by far the best podcast I’ve found on audible. Be warned - it is frightening. Only because it’s real and honest. It does not shy away from any of the real experiences and details.

If you’re into true crime though - this one’s for you.

This author captures the complexity of a controlling, dysfunctional, codependent mother/daughter relationship with all the nuance it deserves. Truly insightful. And, heads up, rather depressing, even if you have done enough therapy to understand your own experience. If you have no personal experience with this specific type of trauma - please do read this to educate yourself. If this has been your entire life experience - please do read this for the hope it holds for us.
