Historia
Sixteenth-century Spanish gentleman Don Quixote, fed by his own delusional fantasies, takes to the road in search of chivalrous adventures. But his quest leads to more trouble than triumph. At once humorous, romantic, and sad, Don Quixote is a literary landmark. This fresh edition, by award-winning translator Edith Grossman, brings the tale to life as never before.

Impeccable
Revisado: 01-09-25
I had never been able to get into Don Quixote. However, I was unable to put this audiobook down. In this recording, the tale seemed so fresh, the language so elegant, the humor modern, and the wisdom transcendent. The translation is marvelous and the performance impeccable. Highly recommended!

Historia
Strange as it may seem, the gray, oppressive USSR was founded on a fairy tale. It was built on the 20th-century magic called "the planned economy," which was going to gush forth an abundance of good things that the lands of capitalism could never match. And just for a little while, in the heady years of the late 1950s, the magic seemed to be working. Red Plenty is about that moment in history, and how it came, and how it went away. Red Plenty is history, it's fiction, it's as ambitious as Sputnik, and as uncompromising as an Aeroflot flight attendant.

The Soul of Fact
Revisado: 09-16-23
As Spufford quoted elsewhere, “The imagination is the power to disimprison the soul of fact.”
Impressively demonstrated in this work.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Historia
From one of the truly preeminent historians of our time, this is a landmark book chronicling the French Revolution. Simon Schama deftly refutes the contemporary notion that the French Revolution represented an uprising of the oppressed poor against a decadent aristocracy and corrupt court. He argues instead that the revolution was born of a rift among the elite over the speed of progress toward modernity and science, social and economic change.

Couldn't listen to this narrator
Revisado: 07-21-19
The narrator has an unpleasant voice and diction and can’t speak French well enough to pronounce names and places. I'll have to read this one. I want my credit back.

Historia
An American Tragedy is the story of Clyde Griffiths, who spends his life in the desperate pursuit of success. On a deeper, more profound level, it is the masterful portrayal of the society whose values both shape Clyde's ambitions and seal his fate; it is an unsurpassed depiction of the harsh realities of American life and of the dark side of the American dream.

Great except for the female voices
Revisado: 09-24-18
Dreiser's novel is wonderful and this performance is very good, except for the voices of the female characters. Without exception the women's voices are delivered in an irritating falsetto. It didn't spoil the experience for me, but it was a distraction. Five stars were it not for that.
