Young Adult Romance Novel.
Revisado: 05-24-24
This really wasn't what I was expecting given the reviews. Maybe this is a very popular series with a younger crowd? What got old immediately was the endless (and I mean endless) juvenile teasing/flirting that takes up the greater part of the book. Add to that, one dimensional, predictable characters in a Hunger Games setting, and it makes for a long ass read. Even the main character was unbelievable. This 18 year old girl, raised since childhood by the best assassin in the world, "Queen of the Underworld" and "Greatest Assassin in the World" acts like a bratty adolescent. Wouldn't she show some of the stereotypical characteristics (that are actually believable) of a highly trained and respected killer? Nope, not our girl. Didn't add up for me and made it hard to like the main character. Some parts of the plot are interesting, when the author pauses her soap opera to get into it. No way am I going to sit through one more of Sarah Maas' books to find out more, though. This book did teach me to take 5 minutes and read the authors Wikipedia page before committing.

It is 2019. NASA astronaut Nigel Walmsley is sent on a mission to intercept a rogue asteroid on a collision course with Earth. Ordered to destroy it, he instead discovers that it is actually the shell of a derelict space probe - a wreck with just enough power to emit a single electronic signal….

Interesting premise, very poor author.
Revisado: 07-12-23
The skeleton of the plot is good. Which is why I purchased the book. The writing, though, very poor. The author tries to be descriptive, overly so. As I read, I noticed that he uses two to three adjectives to describe every. single. thing. Like some sort of pseudo poetry only it's bad. It gets to the point that I couldn't find myself immersed in the story.
The main character isn't likable. Not in a flawed character sence, he's just a jerk. I found myself not caring about his musings (which again, are over wordy) and thinking about something else.
The side plots seem pointless. The main character's wife and their joint lover were useless color to the plot. It seemed like the author needed to fill pages for his editor.
Lastly, the reader. Why he chose to give one of the main characters a western/southern/rural accent when he couldn't be consistent is beyond me. Each time he read in the character's voice, it sounded different to the point where it was difficult to tell who was speaking.
In the end, it cost me kne credit to realize this author is not worth reading.

Amahle is a Light Chaser—one of a number of explorers, who travel the universe alone (except for their onboard AI), trading trinkets for life stories. But when she listens to the stories sent down through the ages, she hears the same voice talking directly to her from different times and on different worlds. She comes to understand that something terrible is happening, and only she is in a position to do anything about it. And it will cost everything to put it right.

LISTEN TO THE SAMPLE
Revisado: 11-27-22
Okay, so I ve never criticized a narrator before. That being said, Imogen Church is awful. Period. She reads like a 15 year old theater kid. There is absolutely no way the author placed that many words in italics, any competent editor would not have allowed it. Yet Imogen narrates as though an over tired child is recalling a story to their parents.
The worst part is the story is captivating. But I find myself "translating" from what I'm hearing, into written word, then imagining what alternatives the author may have meant when characters are speaking had they been read in a more neutral tone. At the end of the day I'll probably buy the book (or ask for it as a throwdown holiday gift idea) but I cannot listen to another chapter. Waste of a credit through no fault of the author.

Historia
The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it....

Classic.
Revisado: 05-14-22
Liked the different alien races and the divergence of space faring humans. interesting takes. Classic sci-fi. Poses questions about a species' ethos as they spread throughout the galaxy. Not too heavy on the interpersonal relationships. The chapter/section about "The Eaters" was truly horrifying. That one will stick with me for a while. Glad I purchased it. First novel woth this author and I'm about to listen to his next one.

At last, one of the world’s greatest works of science fiction is available - just as author Stanislaw Lem intended it. To mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of Solaris, Audible, in cooperation with the Lem Estate, has commissioned a brand-new translation - complete for the first time, and the first ever directly from the original Polish to English. Beautifully narrated by Alessandro Juliani ( Battlestar Galactica), Lem’s provocative novel comes alive for a new generation.

Revisado: 09-01-21
The end of this book was a relief.
At the heart of every good science fiction story is a good philosophical question. This book left you wondering about an endless list of issues but answers none. I'd say spoiler alert but there simply is nothing to spoil. You never actually learn anything creative about the planet or the world in which the character are set. Mysteries are everywhere and you keep listening through the completely pointless asides hoping to find out at least one thing about, well, anything. Then the story ends. Like a cut to black in the middle of an episode.
As for the asides, the author goes on to explain dozens of fictional (deceased) researchers who specialize in obscure sub-genres of this world they're on without actually letting the reader discover anything. The "alien" world is a gigantic ocean which it is debated about weather it is sentient or not but guess what? The reader will never know either. The human behavior of everyone is comically illogical. Add to all this, the main character has a ghost of his dead girlfriend following him around having "we need to talk" conversations. Oh, you never find out what her deal is either. I gave this book a chance because I thought "maybe the movie was just dull due to artistic license". Turns out the movie was a thrill ride comparatively. This novel was an incomplete Twilight Zone episode at best.

Historia
Thirteen hundred gates have opened to solar systems around the galaxy. But as humanity builds its interstellar empire in the alien ruins, the mysteries and threats grow deeper. In the dead systems where gates lead to stranger things than alien planets, Elvi Okoye begins a desperate search to discover the nature of a genocide that happened before the first human beings existed and to find weapons to fight a war against forces at the edge of the imaginable. But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay.

Decline of series continues.
Revisado: 07-30-21
If this was the first book I listened to, it would've been the last. Its as thought the author signed a contract tract for more books than he had story for. Endless filler. i don't need to know how every character feels every second. Especially if it's mindlessly repetitive.
The larger issue u had was the author clearly pandering to the "woke" crowd. Every male character, characters I've grown to enjoy, was sidelined or outright ignored in a comically unimaginative way. The cast was already diverse and complex enough. Why discount characters you've spent several books developing? What's the point? Are you trying to expand your target demographic? Talk about alienating your core audience. Stepping over dollars to pick up quarters. Doubt I'll get the last installment. Shame.

Still an excellent series. That being said, it feels as though the author is tired. The story is there but the overall story seems stretched out. Less action and more filler. Not surprising seeing his publication dates. Its like he had a page quota and filled in the gaps of a rough outline for a story with interpersonal fluff.

Historia
A revolution brewing for generations has begun in fire. It will end in blood. The Free Navy - a violent group of Belters in black-market military ships - has crippled the Earth and begun a campaign of piracy and violence among the outer planets. The colony ships heading for the thousand new worlds on the far side of the alien ring gates are easy prey, and no single navy remains strong enough to protect them. James Holden and his crew know the strengths and weaknesses of this new force better than anyone.

FRAUD.
Revisado: 02-14-21
Spend 30 seconds on Google. Look into the 'Outsider' article on Jamie Smith. Look up Craig Stanford and Jamie Smith. The author is a con man. Period. I was fooled. But I'll never make the mistake of not looking into the veracity of an author ever again. Made it about halfway through before checking up on the author. His timeline makes no sense. The particulars of his employment were hazy. Lastly, his stories border on bad 90's action movies. Don't make the same mistake I did.
