Thoroughly Fascinating and Enjoyable
Revisado: 01-08-23
A fascinating look at how the FBI developed an organization that profiles serial killers. The story moves fairly quickly, and as long as you can handle some of the gruesome details you will most likely find it very interesting and entertaining.

Historia
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

I wish I could give it 6+ stars
Revisado: 06-16-21
This book is an underappreciated masterpiece on the human will. Many people take this as a book about weight loss, or physical conditioning, but you have to listen to it a couple of times to get the REAL message here. The real message is that we ALL live within our comfort zone, be it physically, emotionally, spiritually. This book emphasizes the need to stretch beyond that comfort zone on a daily basis. The philosophy of hardening your mind so that future events will be far easier to handle is a message every American needs to hear, especially Millennials. Goggins is not a poet, and there is zero fluff in this book. It is raw. it is brutal. It is unapologetically simple and direct. The audio format is awesome, and I would highly recommend the audio version of this book over the print version, because it includes podcast-like breaks between chapters where David, himself, explains some of his experiences and tells some interesting stories. If you are at all open-minded, I can't imagine this book disappointing you.

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Historia
The word "barbarian" quickly conjures images of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan. Yet few people realize these men belong to a succession of nomadic warriors who emerged from the Eurasian steppes to conquer civilizations. It's a part of ancient and medieval history that's often overlooked, but for an accurate view of how the world evolved, it's essential. Covering some 6,000 miles and 6,000 years, this eye-opening course illuminates how a series of groups pushed ever westward, coming into contact with the Roman Empire, Han China, and distant cultures from Iraq to India.

Beware...Theology Ahead
Revisado: 08-11-13
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Leave the Christian Message out of it. I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of the book. There were little hints here and there that the story would turn into a pro-Christian fairytale, but I decided to stay with it until Jesus and Mohammed showed up in Iran amongst all the political intrigue and started sorting everything out. Then...the book went away. I have nothing against Christian works, I just despise Christian faith based fiction dressed up like political thrillers.
Has The Twelfth Imam turned you off from other books in this genre?
YES
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Nothing
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Again, the first half seemed to be setting up nicely for a good political thriller. The main characters seemed to be well thought out and they were easy to like.
Any additional comments?
These books should be labeled as Faith based, or Christian faith books.

What made the experience of listening to Medicus the most enjoyable?

The main character is very likable, the author did a great job of setting the scene, and revealing just enough of the story to keep you listening.
Which character – as performed by Simon Vance – was your favorite?
The Medicus (forgot proper name), as well as his contemporary.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
not really.

It might be OK if you're hooked on the series
Revisado: 08-11-13
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
People who enjoy simple crime stories, "Law & Order" style.
What could Faye Kellerman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I could have done without the "Young Adult" love story that is threaded into the main storyline.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Mitchell Greenberg?
Hard to say. Mr. Greenberg did an OK job for the material given, but his reading of the "young adult" love thread was way too syrupy and nerdy for me.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I thought the story had great promise and set up for a great back story, but just kind of fell apart and turned into an Encyclopedia Brown-like mystery.
Any additional comments?
If you're already into this series of characters, then this may make a great addition to your collection. If you enjoy mental gymnastics, you should look elsewhere.
