Historia
Recently engaged and deeply ensconced in her third year of surgical residency in Chicago, Emily Hartford gets a shock when she is called home to Freeport, Michigan, the small town she fled a decade ago after the death of her mother. Her estranged father, the local medical examiner, has had a massive heart attack. At the hospital, she finds her father in near total denial of the seriousness of his condition. He insists that the best thing Emily can do to help him is to take on the autopsy of a senator's teen daughter whose sudden, unexplained death has just rocked the sleepy town.

Almost needed resuscitation to finish the book
Revisado: 09-17-18
The plot (which offered so much promise) dragged on, making me regret my choice. Characters were one dimensional. The story line was improbable. The writer ignored realistic difficulties having her protagonist walk seamlessly away from a surgical residency in Illinois to practice medicine in Michigan and resume a high school romance. The murder was committed to give a peripheral character the chance to win a scholarship to a state university rather than have him matriculate at a local community college which, presumably, would have curtailed his career opportunities. The coroner was a good title for this book which was dead on arrival.

Historia
He's a self-described beach bum who won his houseboat in a card game. He's also a knight errant who's wary of credit cards, retirement benefits, political parties, mortgages, and television. He only works when his cash runs out, and his rule is simple: he'll help you find whatever was taken from you, as long as he can keep half.

Enter John D. MacDonald
Revisado: 08-31-17
MacDonald got better--more developed characters, better plots (not only good guy, bad guy),
less predictable outcomes, and a better way of disposing of needy characters than killing them off. Still, it's a good read and the Travis McGee narrative keeps the action moving.

Exciting and Entertaining
Revisado: 06-29-17
What was especially good about Ramsey's Gold Is that the story is a straightforward narrative with no diverting or confusing subplots. The characters are engaging, and although our hero is kidnapped one too many times, the reader can overlook this in favor of an enjoyable adventure story.

But that changes when, traveling to North Africa on business for her husband, Mary meets a handsome and mysterious French-Tunisian businessman who holds a package her husband has purchased - a package which has drawn the interest not only of Britain's Secret Intelligence Service, but the Nazis as well.

Unbelievably monotonous narrator and slow, slow plot. Not even the recovery of Dido's crown could tempt me more than 15 minutes. Don't believe a 5 score from other readers. I'm beginning to think these votes come from friends and cousins of writer.

Narrator Not Good at Different Voices
Revisado: 06-02-17
Plot was confusing. I was not sure what primary problem was--arson, injured police, psychotic criminal? Too many characters. The narrator did her best, but the struggle was obvious.

Preposterous!
Revisado: 05-31-17
No spoilers but the detective, who has recently been released from prison after being acquitted for killing 3 people, is now in charge of her former unit that was primarily responsible for her arrest and conviction (must have been a previous book) (no hard feelings, huh?). I know that fiction requires suspension of disbelief, but the only disbelief I have about this detective story is the number of "fives" other readers rated it. Finally, is this Detective Grace any relation to Roy Grace in the Peter James series?

Historia
Three very different women come together to complete an environmental survey on the Northumberland countryside. Three women who, in some way or another, know the meaning of betrayal....For team leader Rachael Lambert the project is the perfect opportunity to rebuild her confidence after a double-betrayal by her lover and boss, Peter Kemp. Botanist Anne Preece, on the other hand, sees it as a chance to indulge in a little deception of her own. And then there is Grace Fulwell, a strange, uncommunicative young woman with plenty of her own secrets to hide.

Too Long!
Revisado: 04-28-17
Ann Cleeves (Is it a riff on Anne of Cleves?) can write charming and interesting mysteries. Sadly, this is not one of them. Best I can tell, the plot seems to revolve around zoning approval (already a sleeper). Characters talk and talk and talk without furthering what is already a glacial plot. I tried listening twice but could not reach the end.

Historia
When a woman's body is discovered in a cathedral and hours later a young man is found hanging from a tree outside his home, Detective Lottie Parker is called in to lead the investigation. Both bodies have the same distinctive tattoo clumsily inscribed on their legs. It's clear the pair are connected, but how? The trail leads Lottie to St Angela's, a former children's home, with a dark connection to her own family history. Suddenly the case just got personal.

Interesting but Improbable
Revisado: 04-26-17
A melodramatic plot with too many characters. Prose is full of mixed metaphors meant to wrest the reader's sympathy. Although the bones of the story are based on real events, Gibney stretches her characters' motives beyond belief.

Historia
With poignant insight and humor, Frank Vertosick, Jr., MD, describes some of the greatest challenges of his career, including a six-week-old infant with a tumor in her brain, a young man struck down in his prime by paraplegia, and a minister with a .22-caliber bullet lodged in his skull. Told through intimate portraits of Vertosick's patients and unsparing-yet-fascinatingly detailed descriptions of surgical procedures, When the Air Hits Your Brain illuminates both the mysteries of the mind and the realities of the operating room.

Feels Like Surgery
Revisado: 04-22-17
Dr. Vertosick has managed to hit all the low points in the training and career of a neurosurgeon. The first person narrative contains too much information without conveying the challenge of surgery for the physician and its inevitable outcome for the patient. The performance also adds to the plodding, ordinariousness of the work.

The first part of the novel was fascinating, but without giving away any plot twists, Hill resorts to deus ex machina to get his hero out of trouble. I prefer when protagonists have to solve their problems themselves.
