Too Bad
Revisado: 01-03-25
I have read all the Department Q books and could not wait until this was released. It was in my wish list for months. But it seems the string has played out. This book was such a disappointment. Unnecessarily long in places and then completely rushed toward the end as a whole story about the crooked Danish police woman was summed up, with no prior notice of concern about her. I think this is the end of Department Q. I hope Adler-Olsen has another set of characters and plots in mind. Otherwise I will miss him.

Sophomoric writing and plotting
Revisado: 03-17-23
I just could not finish this book, in fact, not read more than 10% before giving up but no way to return it sadly. Perhaps the story might have been interesting if the writing had not been so trite and pedestrian. It read like a Hallmark movie.

Remarkable narration of a terrific story
Revisado: 09-10-22
My fist Camilla Way book but not my last if this is any indication. The plot is twisty and riveting right up through the end. The narration is remarkable. The story is told from two time points by different protagonists. I totally believed that the narration was done by different people so effectively and believably did this narrator switch voices and accents. A tour de force. Highly recommend this audible book.
Oops, I have just realized there were two narrators. Both were excellent, so different in line with the characters they were portraying that it makes sense it took two different people!

Historia
Ike Randolph has been out of jail for fifteen years, with not so much as a speeding ticket in all that time. But a Black man with cops at the door knows to be afraid. The last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered, along with Isiah’s white husband, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss. Derek’s father Buddy Lee was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed his father was a criminal. Buddy Lee still has contacts in the underworld, though, and he wants to know who killed his boy.

More, more more! This is the second Cosby book I have listened to and each one had blown me away. The characters are unforgettable and the plot is intricate but logical and extraordinarily well developed. The narration is perfect. If every audio book was this good, I would never get anything done!

Historia
Felix Pink is retired. Widowed for more than a decade and a painfully literal thinker, he has led a life of routine. He occupies himself volunteering as an Exiteer - someone who sits with terminally ill people as they die by suicide, assisting with logistics and lending moral support. When Felix lets himself into Number 3 Black Lane, he’s there to keep a dying man company as he takes his final breath. But just 15 minutes later, Felix is on the run from the police. Now he must discover whether what went wrong was a simple mistake - or deliberate, a murder.

I have been a mystery reader for decades and it is such a delight to discover a new author who handles the genre in a creative and new way. This is a terrific book. Yes, there is a mystery and it is a good one. But as a bonus there are marvelous characters, interesting subplots and lots of great writing. I am so glad I found this author. I plan to read/listen to many more by her.

Historia
Five years ago, 14-year-old Max Wheeler disappeared from Priest's Island, an isolated but bleakly beautiful place on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. In the close-knit local community, there are no secrets - except what happened to Max. None of the police or private investigations since have shed any light on what happened the night he went missing, presumed dead. But there is one man who is yet to take on the case: The Sea Detective.

Great but not nearly as good as first book
Revisado: 01-22-22
Douglas-Horn created such a unique character and mystery in his first book, still one of my favorites. The sea and the protagonist's understanding of tides and currents were central to the mystery and helped with the resolution. In the follow up two books the sea is there as a backdrop but with each book is less central to the mystery. They are good books, well narrated, just not fulfilling the promise of the first book in the series.

Historia
At Slough House - MI5’s London depository for demoted spies - Brexit has taken a toll. The “slow horses” have been pushed further into the cold, Slough House has been erased from official records, and its members are dying in unusual circumstances, at an unusual clip. No wonder Jackson Lamb’s crew is feeling paranoid. But are they actually targets? With a new populist movement taking hold of London’s streets and the old order ensuring that everything’s for sale to the highest bidder, the world’s a dangerous place for those deemed surplus.

I am completely hooked on the Slough house gang. Whenever Herron adds to the oeuvre, I am so happy. A listener cannot start with this one of course. A new Slough House book is like a family reunion where everyone catches up with what's been happening. I love this series!

Historia
From Martin Clark - praised by Entertainment Weekly as "our best legal-thriller writer" - comes a wickedly clever, tenderhearted, and intricately plotted novel about a hard-luck lawyer's refusal to concede defeat, even as fate, the court system, and a gang of untouchable con artists conspire against him.

This is a terrific book. It is well narrated and the characters are completely believable. My only complaint is that when everything is revealed at the end, I wanted it to go on longer -- more details! I recommend this book highly!

Historia
The newspaper refers to the body only as Victim 2117 - the 2117th refugee to die in the Mediterranean Sea. But to three people, the unnamed victim is so much more, and the death sets off a chain of events that throws Department Q, Copenhagen’s cold cases division led by Detective Carl Mørck, into a deeply dangerous - and deeply personal - case. A case that not only reveals dark secrets about the past, but has deadly implications for the future.

One of the best from Adler-Olsen
Revisado: 04-11-20
I am a huge fan of this series but I worried in the one before this if perhaps the stream was petering out. Instead Adler-Olsen has come back with a roar. All the favorite characters are here but with new life and important things happening to them. The plot is extremely well devised. It was a terrific diversion during the cornonavirus crisis.

Clumsy and irritating
Revisado: 04-11-20
I really wanted to like this book but finished only because I am self isolating due to the coronavirus. I am a fan of other crime writers whose work is set in Ireland but this was such an unsophisticated example of the genre. Listening as I walked outside, I nearly yelled a few times about obvious questions that should have been asked, steps that of course would have been taken and other actions that seemed merely plot contrivances to make things come out the way the author wanted. The heroine, Cat Connolly, is simply not believable as a mid 20s year old champion kick boxer who also almost lost her life defending another policeman, who is already a detective and who is now pregnant from a one night stand. Way too much time spent on the pregnancy, followed by a surprise reveal at the very end as to who was the father. It is not fair for an author to strew so many red herrings!. Several plots all going at once that conveniently come together in a way that strains credulity. The narrator was good but she had little to work with. I cannot recommend this series.
