Historia
James Bennett, nephew of Sir Henry Merrivale (the cantankerous yet genius sleuth), has been invited to stay at White Priory for Christmas, among the retinue of the glamorous Hollywood actress Marcia Tait. Her producer, her lover, her playwright and her agent are all here along with the haughty master of the estate, Canifes and his daughter. So many suspects they become when Marcia Tait is found dead on Christmas morning in the lakeside pavilion, having been left there alone the night before and with a distinct lack of footprints in the snow to reveal any possible killer.

It was the most convoluted story I’ve ever read, And not worth the effort to keep the huge cast of characters straight.
Revisado: 09-27-24
The performance was mostly expert except the usual bad American accents. I couldn’t share the excitement generated by the reader.

Historia
Superintendent John Lambert finds that a round of golf is the perfect diversion, especially when he’s beating – and offering patronising tips to – his sergeant, Bert Hook. Hook isn’t having much fun, but when he tops a ball horribly, he comes across something far, far more horrible lying in a ditch. The dead young woman, it turns out, was not only a drug dealer, but she was also on the game.

Boring characters. Blackmail again. Repeating himself. I loved some of the early ones. And the two detectives, though repetitious to have the same elaborate descriptions every book.

Clever but a sameness to suspects and crime. Lambert and Hook seem more sadistic this time around.

Historia
Adam Cassidy is one of Brunton’s most famous residents. For the past few years he has played the lead role in a TV detective show that has been a worldwide success. He now believes it is his time for a crack at Hollywood, and, as plans are made for the fifth series, he doesn’t care who he has to betray in order to fulfill his dream. Meanwhile, DCI Percy Peach, now happily married to Lucy Blake, is at a loose end and is in danger of being drawn into the ongoing, and unpopular, local anti-terrorism initiative.

I generally love Gregson (I like Peach but miss Lambert and Hook). But this one takes Forever to get to the murder. Rambling and frustrating though just engaging enough to keep me listening.

Sharply etched characters easy to follow despite difficult names (for English listener). Even though long, they don’t feel too long. Love the detective.

Historia
Maigret sets the record straight and tells the story of his own life, giving a rare glimpse into the mind of the great inspector - and the writer who would immortalise him. 'I can still see Simenon coming into my office the next day, pleased with himself, displaying even more self-confidence, if possible, than before, but nevertheless with a touch of anxiety in his eyes.... He trumpeted these last words as if they were a sensational discovery. Making it seem truer than life, that's the crux of it. Well, I've made you truer than life.'

I’m a huge fan of the Maigret novels, but this plotless ‘memoir’ is a conceit that doesn’t really sustain itself.

Jack Havoc, jail-breaker and knife artist, is on the loose on the streets of London once again. In the faded squares of shabby houses, in the furtive alleys and darkened pubs, the word is out that the Tiger is back in town, more vicious and cunning than ever. It falls to Albert Campion to pit his wits against the killer and hunt him down through the city's November smog before it is too late.

Tedious and grating
Revisado: 08-15-21
Sorry, but I disliked both book and performance. The book is overlong and pretentious, trying to be a Great Novel rather than one of suspense. Over the top reading of a raft of pseudo Dickensian eccentrics.

Historia
What else did they have to do with their days? They ambled around casually. From time to time, they paused, not because they were out of breath but to admire a tree, a house, the play of light and shadow, or a face. While taking a much-needed rest cure in Vichy with his wife, Maigret feels compelled to help with a local investigation, unravelling the secrets of the spa town's elegant inhabitants.

Historia
For its own very good reasons, Scotland Yard sends Dover off to remote Creedshire to investigate the disappearance of a young housemaid, Juliet Rugg. Though there's every cause to assume that she has been murdered - she gave her favours freely and may even have stooped to a bit of blackmail - no body is to be found. Weighing in at 16 stone, she couldn't be hard to overlook. But where is she? And why should Dover, of all people, be called upon to find her? Or, for that matter, even bother to solve the damned case?
