Historia
Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road. One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen, but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, “None of what’s going to happen is your fault.”

horrid narration mars a great story
Revisado: 03-23-24
I wanted to like this, but the narrator's overwrought, breathy, emotional style was so off-putting, especially when she tried to do masculine male voices, but honestly overall.

Historia
In 1968 the world experienced a brand-new kind of terror with the debut of George A. Romero's landmark film Night of the Living Dead. This was something new...and terrifying. Since then, zombies have invaded every aspect of popular culture. But it all started on that dreadful night in a remote farmhouse. Nights of the Living Dead returns to that night, to the outbreak, to where it all began.

Fun anthology, but if all the stories were supposed to be set in 1968, OOF. Glocks that didn't exist yet, an ISS that didn't exist yet, active shooter drills for school kids, a Brad Paisley cd, you get the picture. Just an embarrassing lack of attention to detail.

disappointed.
Revisado: 08-01-23
Winterset is an excellent storyteller, but it's clear she has no real familiarity with the reality of trans men's lives or transmasc culture. Wish she had kept to the formal choices of Written On The Body or the realm of magical realism rather than trying to portray a way of being she hasn't even tried to understand.

Prepare yourself for a transformative experience. Sometimes, life's setbacks contain hidden gifts. Here at Lakewood, you'll find the space to unwrap them. A weekend at the Lakewood Retreat is exactly what Chloe Powell needs. Freshly unemployed after her boss loses a reelection campaign, the former press secretary desperately wants a break from the bustle of Washington DC. A flier posted at her yoga studio leads her to the getaway, which looks amazing: organic meals, celebrity testimonials, and a serene private property within driving distance of the city.

Historia
A young gunslinger is changed for the better by meeting a beautiful woman. A classic range-war Western, this novel features that powerful, romantic, strangely compelling vision of the American West for which L'Amour's fiction is known. In the author's words, "It was a land where nothing was small, nothing was simple. Everything, the lives of men and the stories they told, ran to extremes."

The second novella was marred by cheesy narration and a grotesquely dated "romantic" subplot. The first one was fun.

Historia
Ewan Forbes was born to a wealthy, landowning family, holders of a baronetcy, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, in 1912. Assigned female at birth, his true identity was nevertheless clear even in childhood - and so, with the support of his mother, he was taken to European specialists and eventually treated with early preparations of synthetic testosterone. Socially obliged to present himself as a girl in public until his official coming out to the Queen, Ewan lived a quiet life as a husband, doctor, and a pillar of the local community.

Historia
America in the antebellum years was a deeply troubled country, divided by partisan gridlock and ideological warfare. The Civil War that followed brought America to the brink of self-destruction. But it also created a new country from the ruins of the old one - bolder and stronger than ever. No event in the war was more destructive, or more important, than William Sherman's legendary march through Georgia - crippling the heart of the South's economy, freeing thousands of slaves, and marking the beginning of a new era.

enjoyable narrative history
Revisado: 12-11-21
Enjoyable narrative history. Would have benefited from the inclusion of more Union enlisted men's perspectives and experiences. After all, they were literally the tip of the spear, and it's not like there's a shortage of their letters and diaries. Thoughts and prayers to the listeners who are just now finding out that--yes, Virginia--war is also a women's story.

Wish that (even sympathetic) old men would just ... stop trying to write about rape. That said, the story was good, the narration competent, and the acoustics subpar.

Cursory overview
Revisado: 06-02-21
Author gives a cursory overview of some aspects of the Great War and of the impact of the war on the careers of some of the major players. Obvious and unhelpful modern-day political bias. Look elsewhere for depth of analysis.
