Crushing Blows ...
Revisado: 10-19-21
...to the argument that the US is, was, or even should be a nation founded by christians and on christian principles. The author can't help himself from also laying low the role of religion (any religion) along the way which is likely to keep any self-respecting christians from taking his historical presentment to heart. The danger to freedom is not those seeking to remove religion and religious (totalitarian) influence from our government and government spaces but eminates from this seeking to promote/impose a particular belief, god, ritual, history, practice for all ... even in the name of Liberty and Justice.

In Love Wins, Rob Bell confronted the troubling questions that many people of faith are afraid to ask about heaven, hell, fate, and faith. Using the same inspired, inquisitive approach, he now turns to our most sacred book: the Bible. What Is the Bible? provides insights and answers that make clear why the Bible is so revered and what makes it truly inspiring and essential to our lives. Rob takes us deep into actual passages to reveal the humanity behind the Scriptures.

A story worth telling
Revisado: 07-27-21
As Rob Bell states ... he has a destination in mind but he does travel a meandering path to arrive at that destination ... I would say it's worth the wait ... others may feel they've traveled too far only to arrive at a conclusion (the author's) that may be untenable for all sorts of reasons. I recommend the book to anyone who has a hard time reconciling things in the Bible with their own sense of what is just, fair, right, loving, & noble.

Historia
Faced with the ceaseless stream of news about war, crime, and terrorism, one could easily think we live in the most violent age ever seen. Yet as New York Times bestselling author Steven Pinker shows in this startling and engaging new work, just the opposite is true: violence has been diminishing for millennia and we may be living in the most peaceful time in our species's existence.

Simultaneously Sad & Hopeful
Revisado: 02-22-21
With sometimes overwhelming detail combined staggering statistics, the author paints a picture of humanity improving, growing, reaching for better. As a self-described aetheist the author does not resist laying atrocities at the feet of religion and though indiscriminate one with a 'christian' heritage may possibly feel singled out (unfortunately, there is about 2,000 years of content occupying much of recorded history). One might hope for an apology that takes this data and shows how improvement of the human condition, particularly as it relates to violence, might be attributed to religion ... this is not that book. Whether you agree with the author's conclusions concerning the why and how ... the mere exposure to the facts of humanity's history of violence and the obvious trends toward betterment in this department are both sad and hopeful and well worth the (quite long) read.

Historia
In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

If only 10% we're required reading...
Revisado: 01-16-21
... in our schools today, perhaps change could be expedited. Heavy on stories and stats, this author accomplishes the goal of proving that segregation, disenfranchisement, and many forms of oppression were State sponsored, systematic, and successful at delivering the outcome of inequity we have today. If the beneficiaries of these policies and practices (of which I am one) can just get past being defensive and fearful about whether or not they/we are complicit ... objective consideration of the facts presented here demand a response beyond maintaining status quo.

Nice History Overview
Revisado: 11-16-18
Used as a companion to a broader survey of history, this brings some nice insigh and context into the development of Christian churches. As a stand alone text this whets the appetite of any history student ... highlighting major the themes in Christian belief and structure presented rather objectively.

Historia
Chris Webb, an Anglican priest and retreat house director, wants us all to enter into that kingdom and to experience its freedom. Written with verve, depth, and uncontainable joy, God-Soaked Life invites us to live in the reality of God's presence in our everyday lives. It's an invitation into the community of God's people, into fearless honesty about our own weaknesses and failures, into the daily experience of God through silence, Scripture, and prayer, and into a new life of love and service in the broken world around us.

Practical and Inspiring
Revisado: 09-12-18
I'm reminded of the themes throughout Dallas Willard's Divine Conspiracy and the concept of kingdom/eternity NOW. Yet, Chris Webb's presentation seems more accessible, easier to digest. I appreciate the anecdotes both personal and historical. Plenty of scripture citations make this an ideal book for a group bible study/discussion. I highly recommend ... and the Christian Audio production/performance is excellent.

Historia
A practical approach to creating wealth-based on the established principles of ancient Jewish wisdom-made accessible to people of all backgrounds. The ups and downs of the economy prove Rabbi Daniel Lapin's famous principle that the more things change, the more we need to depend upon the things that never change. There's no better source for both practical and spiritual financial wisdom than the time-tested knowledge found in the ancient Jewish faith and its culture.
