Historia
David Sedaris's beloved holiday collection is new again with six more pieces, including a never before published story. Along with such favorites as the diaries of a Macy's elf and the annals of two very competitive families, are Sedaris's tales of tardy trick-or-treaters ("Us and Them"); the difficulties of explaining the Easter Bunny to the French ("Jesus Shaves"); and what to do when you've been locked out in a snowstorm ("Let It Snow").

A holiday classic!
Revisado: 12-19-24
This is not my favorite David Sedaris work, but I look forward to a listen every year at Christmas. His time as a department store elf is worth every minute.

Historia
It was long ago, but not as long as it seems: The Berlin Wall fell and the Twin Towers collapsed. In between, one presidential election was allegedly decided by Ross Perot while another was plausibly decided by Ralph Nader. Landlines fell to cell phones, the internet exploded, and pop culture accelerated without the aid of technology that remembered everything. It was the last era with a real mainstream to either identify with or oppose. The ’90s brought about a revolution in the human condition, and a shift in consciousness, that we’re still struggling to understand.

I’ve recommended this book to all my GenX friends
Revisado: 08-16-23
As a Gen Xer who graduated from high school in 1993 and experienced the of ups and downs of young adulthood in the 90s, this book provided so much insight from that period of my life.

Historia
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

One of the best memoirs I’ve ever read
Revisado: 03-14-23
I’ve always been a fan of Davis’ work and am amazed by how powerful her presence is every time she’s on screen. I decided to buy this book after she won the Grammy and I am so glad I did. I think it’s important that she is so incredibly honest about her situation growing up but doesn’t try to promote a false narrative that hard work and determination is all it takes to rise out of poverty.

Historia
As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of the organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism.

What a joy to read!
Revisado: 01-01-23
I am so glad this ended up being the last book I read in 2022. I pushed myself to read more than I ever have before in a single year and what a joy it is to cross the finish line with this magnificent memoir from a “rock star” who has certainly made mistakes but who has also most certainly is one of the most significant figures of the past 40 years. You MUST listen to this book rather than read - or do both. Aside from being a well-written (if not a little haphazard in it’s time hopping) memoir, the audio version is so well produced with well-placed music and sound effects. Also, who knew that Bono did impressions?!

Dan Stevens is one of the best narrators EVER
Revisado: 09-22-21
I watched Downton Abbey and enjoyed Dan Steven’s acting quite a bit, but my admiration has grown immensely after listening to this book. He is honestly one of the best audiobook narrators I have ever heard! An absolute classic made even better by his performance.

Historia
Women of color today are contributing to an unprecedented wave of "firsts"-whether they are the first in a family to attend college, the first to serve as CEO of a Fortune 500 company, or the first in public office, women of color are reaching new heights of influence. Cecilia Muñoz was a first, too, and she knows what it means to make her way without exemplars to follow. The first Latinx to lead the White House Domestic Policy Council, Muñoz draws lessons from the challenges she faced as the senior Hispanic person in the Obama White House.
