another great book

i've read pretty much everything this author has written - his grimdark/fantasy stuff is amazing. every time he delivers great worldbuilding, complex characters, and the way he writes action is somehow always exciting. just so you know i'm not a family member gushing over this book and this author, his titles are terrible. 'savage' is an outstanding book with an ordinary title. same thing with his series '131 days' - terrible title that tells you nothing but i promise is a brilliant 5 book series about gladiators that should be boring but never is. anyways--- this guy is up there with Abercrombie for me. 5 stars.

great world and characters

you'll enjoy if you like Abercrombie. very grimdark. well fleshed out world and the characters were all very nuanced and well balanced--- enjoyed the arcs of the characters; each turn surprised me yet was also believable. my only complaint - just so you know im not some paid shill - was the antagonist (while fierce and had a gripping goal) was sometimes a bit petty--- when a villain is cruel for the sake of being cruel it gets a bit redundant. that aside, this was a really great story with an ensemble of characters that were all intriguing. surprised i had never heard of this book before, only stumbled across it as it was suggested in a reader's group i belong to. just finished, and am literally buying book 2 right after i write this.

fresh and engaging

took a chance on this as it was suggested by another author i enjoy - i read a lot of fantasy, so its hard to find stuff that seems "fresh" - somehow, this seems like a fresh approach--- the main characters, if i gave a quick description of them would be mistaken for typical, but i assure you, they come across and fully formed and layered. what is most unique is the STORY. we're basically following a guy who's job it is to solve crimes, along with his young female clerk and his wisecracking buddy--- and it's never, ever boring. believe me, i am a sucker for the bloody action of joe abercrombie, yet this has me engaged non-stop.

really satsifying conclusion

when i began book 1 i actually put it down maybe 30% in, because not much was happeninng - then picked it back up, and the story really started to come together. the way the author has the characters grow and change can be slow and subtle sometimes, but so satisfying.

book 1 started a bit slow to get to know characters and the wrold - but by the time you get to book 2 the tenssion and action is non stop. great characters/world/story/narration
