Couldn't express enough my love for this book. I wanted the book to last hours longer. A great mystery while introducing a new medical procedure and new thoughts and "What Ifs" about death and dying. Superb narration by Zachary Quinto. A must read, a better listen with Quinto.

This was my first book by Celeste Ng and loved it! The story and character development was above par with a great of mods to the 1990s. The description of the, clotges and settings were spot-on. The characters came to life through their past stories and tribulations and their dialogue. The book is part feel good, part mystery, part coming of age and part ethical dilemma. -- all these parts intertwine and help those listener yearn for more and be disappointed when the book ends because you don't want to leave the characters. I think high school and college students should read this book for an entrance and discussion into several societal issues.

I hope that Mia, Pearl and Izzy have their own series of books. They are polarizing at times and would lead to great storylines in their respective futures.

Now to buy another book by the author.

Perplexed on how to rate

it is a rare moment that I am perplexed on how to actually rate a book. I just finished this and will need to think about the rating and come back to it. There were twists and turns, some believable some not, sometimes the narration was good, sometimes not. There is a critical component, almost a superpower if you will, that seems so out of place within the story. It is mostly unbelievable with a sliver of plausibility. I will have to come back to this rating.

This is a short, must listen. One of the most interesting and engaging audible experiences I've had in a while.

Jon Ronson does an outstanding job of first person narrative exposing the effects of pornhub --both the good and bad--through the lens of the Butterfly Effect. This is the first in the series and a must listen!

if I had to explain this to a friend, I would say this book was a cross between a medical mystery and a Dateline Special. I have not read (or listened to) a book by Tami Hoag in many year and glad I selected this book to do so. The story offers the listener a great insight into traumatic brain injury (TBI) as one of the main characters, Dana, is unfortunately dealing with this affliction. Through superb character development and plot progression, the listener is lead on a journey that uncovers a love triangle and the reflections of adolescence behaviors that involved a murder that will leave you guessing until the end. Coincidentally, it is Dana's recovery and coping mechanisms through the TBI that helps save her from others and herself.

Julia Whelan did a superb job with her performance. Shifting between characters was natural. The voice acting was superb as she allowed the listener to hear the voice of anguish and at other times, snarky, direct comments of someone dealing with a TBI. I forward to listening to another book with her.

What propelled me to write the review as soon as I finished listening was the author's note at the end. By providing personal insight into TBI, the listener then fully realizes two main character's plight in dealing with TBI and PTSD. You are left with a call-to-action to not only help, but to understand TBIs more. . .and read (or listen to) another great Tami Hoag book.

Unique book from a teenager's voice & perspective

First of all, the performance was great especially in places where we needed to hear the actual voice, a good job by Scott Williams who I have not listened to before. However, the story was a mixture of mental illness narrative with a teenager's life. Neither were developed as fully as they could have been leaving the listener/reader filling-in some gaps. I felt like descriptions of other characters were more detailed and developed. Worth a listen though and does provide some insight into mental illness and how it affects a person.

A cross between House MD and Mystery Diagnosis!

A great book that was a cross between House MD and Mystery Diagnosis. It is definitely a real-life medial mystery thriller that will keep you reading until you find out the mystery diagnosis. The narrative also sheds light on the easy potential for misdiagnosis even with highly trained providers. Additionally, it makes the reader really think about their own health, and how we should not take our physical and mental health and well-being for granted. While the author does personally narrate her own saga, Heather Henderson does a terrific job conveying the various emotions and unnatural, difficult mental situations. The emotion and subtle inflections helps make this book believable as if you are standing right by Susannah experiencing what she is experiencing, or in the case of this book, experiencing "what she thinks she is experiencing." Additionally, the first person narrative is what really transcends the reader into the illness, the healthcare system and the various caregivers' lives. I applauded the author's research and access to medical records--something missing many other first-hand narratives of disease. This would be a great supplemental text for many college classes. The book sheds light on both the progression of disease and recovery. I gave this four stars because I thought the recovery section was the weakest part of the book and could have been shortened quite a bit, but before that, the book will grab you within the first few pages trying to understand how a disease could quickly can alter your reality and overall health. . . you are likely not to put it down until finished!

Are we all Jewish? A book about religious identity

I would give this book three stars, but the research and narration is good and sometimes humorous as told by the author himself. I like how the author narrated his travels and searches, which sometimes had an undertone of pure amazement and other times resentment when encountering a new Jewish group. I did initially think this book was going to be more of a self discovery of becoming a Jew, but, instead is more of a historical/ethnography of Jews within the United States. Possibly the most interesting section of the book was the Crypto Jews of New Mexico, but, I thought this section could have been researched more since it left the listener (and reader) wanting more details.

The book, however, does detail and expose the various groups of Jews within the United States and actually breaks away many misconceptions that protestant Christians or other religions (or non-religious) people may have about Jews. I would recommend this book to anyone struggling with their own religious identity as our author does, and in his own way, comes to peace with it. Shalom
