Completely engaging listen. The story telling backed up with copious research helps the 3 main stories just flow along. I found myself anxious to get back to listening when I had to stop.

Zara Ramm and Jodi Taylor keep me re-upping my Audible membership. Taylor is in fine firm with this installment and Ramm’s pitch perfect narration made thi an absolute joy!

Good story but poor story editing and delivery

The premise of this story was engaging and interesting. Bakeries, pastries, a WWII mystery all should have been right up my alley.

Oh my goodness though, I lost count of how many times the main character or her daughter spoke or said something [in a small voice.] Good GAD. I almost started a drinking game. Gallery Publishing is an imprint of Simon and Schuster. Did they run out of editors to notice things like this? Honestly I think Kristin Harmel uses the expression at least 10 times. Why not [in a soft voice] or [softly] or [murmured] or [whispered] or .... When the last two [in a small voice] moments occurred withing 5 minutes of each other, I burst out laughing. Not the right reaction at that dramatic point in the story.

The narrator Kim McKean makes a valiant but unfortunate stab at a French accent. Ordinarily, I do not ding a narrator for a missed vowel or wrong accent on a syllable but McKean was so inconsistent that is was a major distraction for me. Was she going for a French accent or a German or Russian or American Tourist? When 50% of your characters are speaking in a French accent, you have to get either the accent or the cadence right or else abandon the effort all together. Also the vocal fry in her delivery was so disconcerting that it took me out of the story frequently. The growl at the end of each sentence was irritating to listen to. I really enjoy most of Audible's productions. This was was a bit of a miss for me.

Fun

Highly entertaining, fun story. Loved the narration. Price-Lewis captured the sly humor and tone perfectly. Fans of Taylor's St. Mary's series will not be disappointed.

Beguiling and entertaining

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a highly entertaining and laugh out loud funny book. I cannot recall the last time that I listened to a book this engrossing and humorous. Dan O'Grady is the perfect narrator for this story. He is the voice of Don now in my imagination. I am telling everyone about this book. It was just pure fun and provided very thought provoking discussions with others who have read it.

Perfectly captured the tone and voice of Don Tillman and the humor of the story.

I will be back to get the audiobook of the sequel, The Rosie Effect. There are some series I can only listen to when the blend of story and narrator are this perfect.

This is performed more like a radio play than a pure audiobook. Penelope Keith is a perfect Agatha Raisin. Very fun.

History and mystery

I am such a fan of this series. Sansom mixes history and mystery in these superb historical thrillers. Revelation is a fascinating glimpse into the religious turmoil that marked Henry VIII's reign. Steven Crossley's narration is so well done. Cannot recommend this series too highly.

Victorian humor

Frederick Davidson brought Butler's humor and irony to life with his pitch perfect reading of this story. I was running out of time to finish the book for a my reading group when I found this version.
This is not a book I would have chosen for "light" reading but Davidson's delivery really brought the story of the hapless Theobald Pontifex and his hypocritical Victorian parents to life.
