Frank Hamer. They don't make men like him anymore. Tough, honest, smart, confident without arrogance and above all, fair.

I liked the way the author told the story of Frank Hamer, warts and all. While he clearly admired him, he did not shy away from his poor decisions or rare bad behavior. All in all, his was a remarkable life, well worth learning about.
The narrator was perfect.

A particular view of history from FDR to the mid-70s, from the perspective of the men who helped shape it. Riveting. I don't think there are too many diplomats or foreign policy advisors like these men anymore. Their purpose was to serve the US as best they could. Remarkable men with brilliant minds, beholden to no one. I learned so much.

This is an exquisite book about a fascinating man. Old school, old money but a very moral, dedicated, hard working family man and the things he accomplished in his tragically short life. Seems like he just knew who was--a very well educated man who happened to come from a little money but he was also kind of a regular guy. He was also a lawyer who seemed to be able to cut through all the garbage and get right to the heart of the matter in plain terms. He wanted to know the truth and respected it when he got it. His life is so much more than just Bridge of Spies. I'm so happy I listened. What an amazing man. through his work in Ww2 he gets a reputation as a hard worker, smart. One thing leads to another and before you know it he's negotiating wth Fidel Castro for some peoples freedom. He gets way more than expected because he was so DAMN GOOD! Read this fantastic book!

Nothing compelling about this story, sad to say. I was really looking forward to it.

I love this author's books but this one was just too much. Maybe it was because I had the audiobook but holy cow, it felt like a Russian novel. So many different characters and subplots, locations and theories. And the gun talk! Oy. Unending. Could not finish.

Kind of a convoluted, drawn out story line but Steven Weber made me finish it.
