Historia
In 2019, author John Green met Henry Reider, a young tuberculosis patient at Lakka Government Hospital in Sierra Leone. John became fast friends with Henry, a boy with spindly legs and a big, goofy smile. In the years since that first visit to Lakka, Green has become a vocal advocate for increased access to treatment and wider awareness of the healthcare inequities that allow this curable, preventable infectious disease to also be the deadliest, killing over a million people every year. In Everything Is Tuberculosis, John tells Henry’s story.

Beautiful and Important but Didactic
Revisado: 04-06-25
If you know John Green’s nonfiction work at all, then you should know what you’re getting—a beautiful and timely story on an important topic told very much from his political point of view. This means that this lecture can often feel like being lectured. Still, it’s a very moving and informative lecture.

You’ll learn how these three literary masters structured their novels to offer not only scares but also complex insights into cultural debates that still matter to us today.

Dracula is not boring
Revisado: 10-13-24
This is a pretty solid and interesting discussion of these three texts, especially if you’re into literary analysis. He does a nice job of not going too far into identity and sexuality politics as well. My big quibble with him is his too insistent refrain that Dracula is a boring book. If you have not read Dracula, don’t listen to him. It’s a great read and probably an even better listen!

In the 10 episodes of The Real History of Dracula, folklorists Dr. Sara Cleto and Dr. Brittany Warman, of The Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic, will shine a light into the dark recesses of our cultural obsession with vampires. Using folklore, literature, history, television, film, and more, Sara and Brittany will show you how—and why—vampires are a potent metaphor for what matters most about the human condition.

Not Quite What I Was Expecting
Revisado: 10-11-24
While I was expecting more of a deep dive into Vlad the Impaler and how he was a model for Dracula, I got a lot more than that. Which was great to an extent. The presenters spoke about Vlad, yes, but they looked at other historical influences; they looked at other folklore and legends; they looked at modern depictions; they looked at diseases. But through all of their discussions there was the constant undercurrent of the debacle of modern college humanities instruction—identity and sexuality politics. If there’s an -ism they didn’t discuss, it wasn’t for a lack of trying. I finally had enough when the reason for vampires in 19th century Europe being pale and white was because of racism, “of course,” to quote one of the presenters.

Enjoyable story
Revisado: 02-26-24
Solid writing, great transformative story of Murtagh. Lots of back story details about Murtagh filled in. Murtagh’s redemptive travails are so gut wrenching. I really felt his past painfully haunting who he wants to be in the present. Love the transformative journey.

Powerful and Life Changing
Revisado: 02-18-24
Not giving the enemy a seat at my table seems so simple, but I’d never thought about it before. As many times as I’ve read Psalm 23, I’d never thought of it before. Nine words that will change the way you think and so nine words that will change the way you live. Even if my life is not what I thought it would be, is not what I want it to be, is too difficult to live, I will praise the Lord, praise the Lord, praise the Lord.

The reader is so bad I can’t endure listening to another book in this series - sorry. Also, the author has written non-Earth beings using common Earth vernacular….. which does not make any sense.

It is still unbelievable the worlds that Rowling can create, the characters, the setting, the atmosphere. The plot is as tightly drawn as ever, keeping me glued to my phone, listening to every minute. And what hasn’t been said about Robert Glenister. Simply amazing!

First Horowitz Disappointment
Revisado: 06-13-23
I have loved every Anthony Horowitz book I’ve read—until this one. I’m not exactly sure what his goal as a Holmes book was with this. I have one in my mind, but I’m not crazy about it and can’t discuss without spoiling the story. Whatever his goal, I wasn’t happy.
