Historia
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Third time is a pleasant charm
Revisado: 05-08-24
After enjoying the first few television episodes of A Gentleman in Moscow, I decided to listen again for the third time this wonderful book. As in the two earlier listenings I was saddened that this book was coming to a close again.
This story is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. The dichotomy of emotions is palpable and nearly overwhelming. This book has to be enjoyed like the count’s brandy . I put it in the top dozen books that I have read and read. The civility of Count Rostov in the face of a lifetime of being under house arrest as a non person is something that I will never have to experience. Life long triumvirate friendships were forged at the Metropol. Parenthood by trial and error becomes just another opportunity for the Count to define his circumstances rather than allowing himself to be controlled by his circumstances.

Mark Harmon would have been better served by engaging a professional narrator to tell this tale. His disjointed and often halting speech was a major distraction to the story

One of the very best, albeit gory, Harry Hole stories yet
Revisado: 10-01-23
Jo Nesbo doesn’t disappoint. I’ve read all of the previous books in the series, and I think I’ve enjoyed this one the most..
I can’t help thinking that this may be the last chapter; but like the book, the final words gave a glimmer of hope that Harry might be back! Can’t wait!

For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam.

Revisado: 12-21-22
I’d say that it a reasonable assumption that Eleanor in the TV series is a little different than the original book. I like the storyline . Not a big fan of Dick Hill as the narrator but I got used to it. The basic Bosch character is brilliant and I can’t wait to listen to book 2

An elderly couple have made a few well-meaning mistakes, and now they owe big money to some very bad people. One brazen move leads to another, and suddenly Reacher finds himself a wanted man in the middle of a brutal turf war between rival Ukrainian and Albanian gangs.

Time to say goodbye Jack
Revisado: 09-29-20
I’ve listened to every single Reacher book that Lee Child has written. I suffered through Dick Hill’s narrative; but the stories were good enough to make me still look forward to another one.
That ended with BLUE MOON. This book was written with no enthusiasm or originality. The gratuitous violence was, by and far, the worst I’ve listened to in all of the previous books. It was so far over the top in the shallow story line, I wondered if someone else had written it. I was reminded of the Stieg Larsson / David Lagercrantz drop off in the Millennium Series .
Maybe Reacher needs to retire..

Historia
In a secret meeting in 1981, a master thief named Louis Royce gave career gangster Ralph Rossetti the tip of a lifetime. As a kid, Royce had visited the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and made a habit of sneaking in at night to find a good place to sleep. He knew the Museum's security was lax, and he gave this information to a boss of the Boston criminal underworld. It took years before the Museum was hit. But when it finally happened, it quickly became one of the most infamous art heists in history.

25 years of waiting.. And a bit of a letdown.
Revisado: 03-24-15
I live in Boston, work in East Boston in the shadows of many places mentioned. I remember the heist, and the roller coaster decades of false reports of a breakthrough in the case. I had hoped that a Boston Globe reporter could bring some insight into the story. Unfortunately it is a book of rehashed newspaper stories told in clipped and tacit prose. Hard to follow the non linear tangents and filler stories.

A GREAT book with an underwhelming ending..
Revisado: 10-01-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes. I've read/ listened to seven books written by this author. Simon Vance is one of my favorite performers; and was the reason that I started to listen to Chris Ewan.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The story moved along very well; and it was not too predictable. I was a little disappointed in the the ending. I feel that most authors write a great book; but few know how to gracefully and eloquently close. All of Chris Ewan's "Good Thief Guides" ended in a satisfying way; and I would have preferred a different ending to this one. Having said that, I don't want to give the impression that the book is, in any way, flawed. It's certainly not! It held my interest and developed characters very well.
Have you listened to any of Simon Vance’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have yet to listen to a sub par performance by this narrator. His "American" male character voice in DEAD LINE was a little reminiscent of the American character voice of all of the Patrick O'Brian Jack Aubry books. I found it amusing to think that a US Navy Captain from 1812 was time-transported to modern day Provence..
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Yes.
Any additional comments?
I will certainly look for more books by Chris Ewan; and listen to them with enthusiasm..

A Thrilling Ride-- Right up to the very last word.
Revisado: 07-30-13
What made the experience of listening to The Bat the most enjoyable?
After listening to several books in the Harry Hole series, out of sequence (this book was only recently made avaialble), it was enjoyable to learn some of the back stories alluded to in later books. Anyone just "discovering" Jo Nesbo and Harry Hole will do themselves a great service by starting with book 1.
I've never been to Australia; but have several good friends who leve there; and John Lee "nailed" the accents as far as I can tell. Most enjoyable was the final chapter. Some may say "predictable"; but it's a helluva finish.
Who was your favorite character and why?
We get to meet Harry almost on holiday at first; but he soon demonstrates why he was sent to OZ to solve the case.. We also get to see a rather unflattering, yet understandable side of Harry that needed to be told.
What does John Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
To dedicate the narration to Robin Sachs was a thoughtful gesture. He adds (IMHO) authentic Aussie accents and allows you to get into the story very fast.
