Historia
In 1912, at the height of World War I, brilliant Shakespeare expert Elizebeth Smith went to work for an eccentric tycoon on his estate outside Chicago. The tycoon had close ties to the US government, and he soon asked Elizebeth to apply her language skills to an exciting new venture: code breaking. There she met the man who would become her husband, groundbreaking cryptologist William Friedman. Though she and Friedman are in many ways the Adam and Eve of the NSA, Elizebeth's story, incredibly, has never been told.

Well written view into the life & work an important woman
Revisado: 02-03-23
Wars and rumors of wars there will be…often times the real heroes and heroines must remain cloaked in secrecy for multiple reasons. This view into the lives of Elizabeth S and William F Friedman breaks the code of secrecy. It is well written - my husband and I enjoyed learning of their lives and work on behalf of our great nation even as they laid the foundations for cryptanalysis in the US and in other Allied countries!

Tears in my eyes
Revisado: 11-03-22
Awesome story…written from deep within the heart. A coming of age story many would say. But, if so it is a story written with much heart and truth of a time when life was hard, but, simpler and yet it’s truths applicable to our lives today in these tumultuous times. My son told me that is considered a Classic…I agree!

What a story!!
Revisado: 10-10-22
Written in such a way as to make these real life characters very transparent. While we enjoyed the story of the many adventures and close calls that Dolly & her family members encountered we were horrified by the abuse they all suffered at the hands of Harry!! Having grown up under the authority of an abusive father it was hard at times to hear of the similar abuses I had suffered being experienced by Dolly and her children. I am glad that at least Harry mellowed some in his declining years and perhaps made some amends with Dolly who obviously loved a cruel and unjust man a lot!
Even with the odd twists of abuse I would still recommend the book.

In 1929, Katya is 16 years old, surrounded by family and in love with the boy next door. When Stalin’s activists arrive in her village, it’s just a few, a little pressure to join the collective. Resistance has a price, and as desperate hunger grips the countryside, survival seems more a dream than a possibility. But, even in the darkest times, love beckons. INCREDIBLY WELL WRITTEN
Revisado: 09-23-22
I’m not sure what to say…but this book is extremely well written and so important for people around the free world to know of the horrific conditions of the holodomor and the suffering of the people. My husband has been to Ukraine 4 times to work on 2 different churches and to speak in universities on history. I accompanied him one time and taught prepared child birth. Our hearts are absolutely breaking over the unconscionable situation in Ukraine now that the Russians have invaded. We have friends in and out of Ukraine and many other Eastern European countries. The monster of Russia must be stopped!!!

Excellent read!!
Revisado: 09-10-22
This story captured my & my husband’s attentions from the very beginning. The story of this most unfortunate historical event is very well written. The characters are well developed & very believable. I found myself not only tearing up at times during the story, but, also feeling the fear that those characters must have felt during dangerous situations. It also held an element of personal interest since we both grew up in what is referred to as the greater CSRA (Central Savannah River Area) since that is where we both grew up in or near Aiken, SC & Augusta, Georgia.
We recommend it highly!

INCREDIBLE - AWESOME STORIES!!!!
Revisado: 05-25-22
My husband and I have listened to all 3 of Dr Tom Smith’s books on Audible. They are fascinating, fun and a very informative & enlightening view into the life of a Physician practicing in Scotland and around the world! We would highly recommend them!!! Of course it doesn’t hurt that our heritage is Ulster Scot and we’ve had the privilege to visit Scotland and the North Of Ireland, commonly known as Northern Ireland several times. We both love “the old country and considered the possibility of returning there to live from our home in the USA, had it not been for leaving our family we probably would have given it a go!!!

Great story from “the old country”
Revisado: 05-18-22
My husband and I have travelled in Scotland & Northern Ireland on several occasions. It has been very interesting to listen to this and one other book by this author, and especially when read BY the author! His stories are well written, very interesting and contain enough funny stories to have kept us smiling and chuckling throughout. His description of Rio De Janeiro is exactly as I found it to be when I was there in 2007 to minister to street children - what a horrible state of affairs & existence!!! We both highly recommend books by Dr Tom Smith!!

It was with pleasure that I learned at the very end that it was read / narrated by none other than then the author himself!!! Which made it all the more real & enjoyable!!!

Historia
Tired of the pace and noise of life near London and longing for a better place to raise their young children, Mary J. MacLeod and her husband, George, encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud and startled owners of a near-derelict croft house - a farmer’s stone cottage - on “a small acre” of land. Mary assumed duties as the island’s district nurse.

Window into life of Island folk
Revisado: 03-09-22
Each chapter is a complete story in and of itself. Mary weaves her stories around the lives of the Island Folk, revealing their ways and customs in a most intriguing way. I was first introduced to her writing when I purchased purchased a paperback book in the gift shop
at Culloden Battlefield in Scotland. I was delighted to find several more books by her on Audible. I will definitely listen to all that she writes! Did I mention that I am myself a retired nurse?

Dublin 1950: Liesl Bannon has never felt like she was truly at home anywhere, not since her mother placed her and her brother Erich on the last Kindertransport out of Berlin in 1939. She’d been so much more fortunate than most Jews, saved from the horrors of the Nazi regime. Being adopted by Elizabeth and Daniel Lieber meant she and Erich spent the war in Northern Ireland, safe and loved, but Liesl always knew something was missing.
