Historia
For years, Emma Carey was a regular young adult who would wake up and go about their day on autopilot, someone who would look at a sunset and feel unaffected, someone who was living, but not really alive. That is, until something happened that enabled her to really see life for the gift it is. Emma was in a skydiving accident that made her a paraplegic. This book is not just about Emma's fall from the sky and how she learned to walk without ever regaining feeling in her legs but also about the beliefs and ideas that helped her survive.

Inexcusable Abuse
Revisado: 10-04-24
"Emma stayed strong throughout the humiliation of the insurance industry and the callousness of the legal profession. "
Above is a quote from another reviewer which should not be forgotten. Emma had no choice but to endure additional mental and physical abuse to prove over and over again, over five years, that, yes, she's paraplegic. Physicians knew this Day One.
I visited Dachau concentration camp as a 25 year old. The frigid air and the horror of the torture areas has never left me 50 years later.
Emma's story was just as appalling.

Historia
In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world”. She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch - first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her 23rd birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival.

Didn't want this book to end. Ten Stars.
Revisado: 09-25-24
This amazing woman managed to chronicle her cancer journey without making the reader sick from the details describing her pain and grief, suffering right through college and a job she created for herself. For me, this book was devoid of self pity; she managed to work right through the chemo years, scars, loss of cancer friends, and major physical changes.
One pet peeve about this very well educated scholar's narration: pronunciation of words like mountains, i.e., "mount-ins", and several words like that.

Jessie Black's successful prosecution of a serial murderer and rapist put her on the path to stardom at the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office. Public defender Jack Ackerman represented the opposition, and his spectacular public breakdown after the trial put him in a mental institution and gave Frank Ramsey a second chance at freedom. When Ramsey petitions the court for a new trial with a claim that Ackerman was ineffective, Black must step up to defend him.

I like Xe Sands very much. Consequently, I searched for all of the books she has narrated.

Historia
The siren song of Cerro Gordo, a desolate ghost town perched high above Death Valley, has seduced thousands since the 1800s, but few fell harder for it than Brent Underwood, who moved there in March of 2020, only to be immediately snowed in and trapped for weeks. It had once been the largest silver mine in California. Over $500 million worth of ore was pulled from the miles of tunnels below the town. Butch Cassidy, Mark Twain, and other infamous characters of the American West were rumored to have stayed there. Newspapers reported a murder a week. But that was over 150 years ago.

Well Written. Pronunciation Needed Editing.
Revisado: 05-27-24
I've followed Brent's YouTube channel since the beginning of the pandemic. One of his best videos is about how he had a ring made from the silver in his very own silver mine!, but, he mispronounces "Chaparral", the greatest name of his jeweler. The most tragic story about the fire was so well written, but, he mispronounces "bereaved"!
Notwithstanding mispronouncing common English words, his story is wonderful, and I have listened to this book several times. Great while hiking.

Historia
Returning to practice after a suspension for stealing opioids, a young doctor takes the only job he can find: a post as a physician at the struggling St. Luke's Hospital in east London. Amid the maelstrom of sick patients, overworked staff and underfunded wards, a more insidious secret soon declares itself: too many patients are dying. And a murderer may be lurking in plain sight.

Brilliant mind put this story together!
Revisado: 07-07-23
I wish many, many more people knew about this book. Sometimes I hear of people disliking accents, (i.e.,) some people wanted David Attenborough series narrator dubbed with an American accent!)
I have listened to this book three times, even though I knew the unexpected twists in the story were coming. Author is way up there in talent with Michael Connelly' s EARLY books with this story.

Historia
If you caught a glimpse of heaven, would you choose to comeback to life?
Investigative journalist Judy Bachrach has collected accounts of those who died and then returned to life with lucid, vivid memories of what occurred while they were dead, and the conclusions are astonishing. Clinical death - the moment when the heart stops beating and brain stem activity ceases - is not necessarily the end of consciousness, as a number of doctors are now beginning to concede.

Mispronounced common medical terms!
Revisado: 04-28-23
Judy managed to write, accurately, her book on after- death experiences that all previously well-known, and well- researched books on this subject already covered, in another interesting way. However, after having spent quality time interviewing several physicians about their experiences, she STILL mispronounced common medical terms. Couldn't finish reading.

Historia
When Jon Katz got a call from an animal control officer about Simon, a neglected donkey who had been found on a failing farm in upstate New York, he wasn't expecting to add another animal to his already full life. But when he made the trek out to meet him, he couldn't help falling in love with the skinny, mangy donkey who had already suffered so much, and he ended up taking him into his home. It was Simon who listened in the fields as Jon read to him and discussed philosophy.

Gets Preachy. Sorry I used a credit on this
Revisado: 06-07-21
Tries to convince reader he was right in forgiving the guy who abandoned defenseless Simon. The owner was well and able to get help with abandoning this animal, saying he had ZERO interest in PREVENTING Simon's suffering. Instead, the author went to visit to ascertain the owner's level of ability to communicate his difficulty with saving the animal. He quotes the animal's owner: "I thought he was dead", a GUESS from the owner, since he NEVER spent time with welfare checks for Simon.

Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain, yet we know very little about how it works. Gut: The Inside Story is an entertaining, informative tour of the digestive system from the moment we raise a tasty morsel to our lips until the moment our body surrenders the remnants to the toilet bowl. No topic is too lowly for the author's wonder and admiration, from the careful choreography of breaking wind to the precise internal communication required for a cleansing vomit.
