Historia
Mercer Mann, a popular writer from Camino Island, is back on the beach, marrying her boyfriend, Thomas, in a seaside ceremony. Bruce Cable, infamous owner of Bay Books, performs the wedding. Afterward, Bruce tells Mercer that he has stumbled upon an incredible story. Mercer desperately needs an idea for her next novel, and Bruce now has one. The true story is about Dark Isle, a sliver of a barrier island not far off the North Florida coast. It was settled by freed slaves three hundred years ago, and their descendants lived there until 1955, when the last one was forced to leave.

Not the best Grisham book
Revisado: 08-19-24
I have read and loved every Grisham book before this one. The story simply was not compelling and often. I was submerged in obscure and uninteresting background information. I was really looking forward to listening to this book, and I came away, quite disappointed.

Historia
So begins this suspenseful, impeccably researched history that draws on new access to diaries to tell the story of three men who were intimately involved with America’s decision to drop the atomic bomb—and Japan’s decision to surrender. They are Henry Stimson, the American Secretary of War, who oversaw J. Robert Oppenheimer under the Manhattan Project; Gen. Carl “Tooey” Spaatz, head of strategic bombing in the Pacific, who supervised the planes that dropped the bombs; and Japanese Foreign Minister Shigenori Togo.

Compelling and enjoyable
Revisado: 11-20-23
I have read or listened to every book written by John Grisham. Although this was not his best, I found it compelling and reasonably fast paced. I did not listen to it in one or two settings, but rather spaced it out over a few weeks, and each time I returned to the book, I was always engaged.

A mediocre story
Revisado: 09-03-23
This murder mystery was performed quite decently, but the story itself was lacking in anything, compelling or imaginative. There were several times during my listening to the story, where I wanted to just forget it and move onto another book.

And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. A passionate, intense and beautifully written book
Revisado: 02-20-23
This is an absolutely fantastic book. The narrator is outstanding. The author captures us, avoiding the Mexican cartels, hiking for days through the interminably, hot Sonoran desert, and experiencing so many painful, intense twists and turns. The writing gives the reader, a passionate, intense empathetic identification with the struggles and turmoil that migrants face. I recommend this book most highly.

An Illuminating Presidential Memoir
Revisado: 12-29-20
Listening to President Obama read his "A Promised Land," was such an incomparable treat. His political insight is only matched by his integrity, honesty and empathy. To revisit all the struggles and accomplishments of the Obama presidency through the words of such a gifted writer and speaker felt like you were standing beside our President in the oval office. Ofcourse it is a lengthy narrative, but the wisdom and candor throughout the book made the almost 30 hours of listening well worth the investment. I look forward to volume 2 with great anticipation.

Robert Iger became CEO of The Walt Disney Company in 2005, during a difficult time. Competition was more intense than ever, and technology was changing faster than at any time in the company’s history. His vision came down to three clear ideas: Recommit to the concept that quality matters, embrace technology instead of fighting it, and think bigger - think global - and turn Disney into a stronger brand in international markets.

Historia
Abby Kelley Foster arrived in Springfield, Illinois, with the fate of the nation on her mind. Her fame as an abolitionist speaker had spread west, and she knew that her first speech in the city would make headlines. One of the residents reading those headlines would be none other than the likely next president of the United States. Abraham Lincoln, lawyer and presidential candidate, knew his chances of winning were good. All he had to do was stay above the fray of the slavery debate and appear the voice of reason until the people cast their votes.

Outstanding new book
Revisado: 08-24-20
Charles Rosenberg has done it again
He has written a compelling new book. He weaves a story with many twists and turns. The reader or the listener is brought back into history page after page. The narration is also excellent. Unfortunately the focus on the electoral college and challenged and uncertain election outcomes for the presidency may be all too relevant to the current presidential election.

Outstanding Story and Housing Crisis Analysis
Revisado: 04-09-20
I have just completed listening to Conor Dougherty's book, Golden Gates, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I teach a graduate level course on the Berkeley Campus at the University of California, and a number of our classes have focused on the housing crisis in California. I have read several of Conor's articles in the New York Times describing the background of the crisis, but Golden Gates really put everything in an incredibly provocative and informative context. Occasionally, when the author is the narrator, it loses something in presentation. However, Conor's narration was outstanding, as was his book. I highly recommend Golden Gates to anyone interested in learning more about the background to and approaches to resolving the housing crisis in California and throughout the nation.
