Historia
How can we ever be sure that we really know the other? To test the limits of our ability to inhabit lives that are not our own, Charles Foster set out to know the ultimate other: the nonhumans, the beasts. And to do that, he tried to be like them, choosing a badger, an otter, a fox, a deer, and a swift.

Snuffle through the tunnel like a badger
Revisado: 04-18-18
Where does Being a Beast rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is one of the best. It's almost otherworldly as Foster lives like the animals himself, smelling messages from other beasts and getting dirt up his nose underground
What did you like best about this story?
The honesty in the preface was about as good as the "trials" themselves. Everyone has wondered what it would be like to be an animal, but, as he explains, we will never truly be able to. Despite this, he gets as close as he can to approximating their reality.
Which scene was your favorite?
Nearly fell off the exercycle laughing about his badger attempts.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I loved this book. Some of it was serious and I learned from it, but some of it was hilarious.
Any additional comments?
This book is a real escape to other realities. I've never read anything quite like it (wrote the English major). I hope Mr. Foster continues to burrow his way through life and write more and more. My thanks to him.

Historia
A rich, sweeping, and compelling work of botanical history, The Cabaret of Plants explores dozens of plant species that for millennia have challenged our imaginations, awoken our wonder, and upturned our ideas about history, science, beauty, and belief. Going back to the beginnings of human history, Richard Mabey shows how flowers, trees, and plants have been central to human experience not just as sources of food and medicine but as objects of worship, actors in creation myths, and symbols of war and peace, life and death.

Ideas jump about
Revisado: 05-21-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
There's such a lot of peripheral detail that I got bogged down by unrelated happenings (how a friend photographs flowers, for instance.) There's only a scraping of information that is about 40,000 years of history: it's notable by its absence until agriculture became more prominent and records of any kind were left for us today. True, I have only listened to the first chapter, but there seems to be little of the "history" of plants and the imagination.
Would you recommend The Cabaret of Plants to your friends? Why or why not?
No. Most of my friends prefer a straightforward logical approach to information about even non-scientific topics.
How could the performance have been better?
The breathy excitement of the narrator may show his enthusiasm, but it's one-note approach was difficult to relax to.
Was The Cabaret of Plants worth the listening time?
I would rather have read it in my own way. Later chapters do sound interesting.
Any additional comments?
Perhaps I should not have had preconceived notions that could be so easily disappointed. I did listen to the online intro, but this personal odyssey was not what I expected.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Wonderful tale well told - unforgettably real
Revisado: 09-11-15
Where does The Martian rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of the best audiobooks ever! The narration is so well-connected to the character and the MacGuyvering of al the equipment is just as suspenseful as any fiction.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Martian?
Finally making contact with Earth after such a solitary time
Which scene was your favorite?
Eating the Last Meal.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes yes yes. I usually reserve my book time for exercising, but I had to keep it plugged in at home to find out what happens.
Any additional comments?
Some people may be bored by the cobbling together of the machinery. It's very science oriented. If you want the action of an adventure movie, this is not that. (Suspenseful nevertheless.) But for one man's perseverance and enduring efforts, it makes you laugh and cry and hope and starve at the same time.
