Faith Hunter is talented at both world building and character development. It's hard to wait for the next book in any of her series. This spinoff of the Jane Yellowrock series is fully developed and enjoyable.

I've been reading Benjamin Cremer's weekly newsletter for quite a while. It's wonderful that he's expanding his ministry to include a podcast. this is a great listen for anyone who's having trouble finding inspiration.

John McWhorter presented a fascinating course. The material was well organized and engaging. I was thrilled to see that he has six more titles available on Audible. I plan to buy them all.

Distracting sound effects

Would you consider the audio edition of The Magic of Recluce to be better than the print version?

I don't have the print version, but I would imagine that not having to hear the sound effects would be a vast improvement.

If you’ve listened to books by L. E. Modesitt Jr. before, how does this one compare?

Modesitt had apparently outgrown the tendency to insert written sound effects by the time he wrote the Imager Portfolio series. The constant "clop clop," "splat," "pow"... in this reminded me of childhood comic books. While I would recommend the Imager series to anyone I will probably not be finishing this series, unfortunately I've already bought two more of the series on a sale. I'll give one of the later ones a listen to see if he quit including the gratuitous sound effects.

Any additional comments?

While the story was basically enjoyable the sound effects I mentioned earlier in my review cut my rating from 4 stars to 3.

New narrators should listen to previous books.

Would you listen to Tempt the Stars again? Why?

No, I was constantly irritated by quirks in the narration.

What did you like best about this story?

I was glad that we got to know Pritkin better and enjoyed the concept that Earth is one of the "lesser hells."

How could the performance have been better?

I'm sure it's a difficult task to come into a series on book number 6, but surely Allyson Ryan could have taken the time to listen to one or two of the previous books. The loss of Billy's accent and the pronunciation of Pritkin's father's name Rosier (I'm unsure of the spelling since I've not read print on any of these books) almost ruined the book for me. A few other awkward pronunciations also grated on my nerves as well as the intermittent choice of shrieking/squealing some of Cassie's responses during fight scenes.

The publishers should try their best to get Cynthia Holloway back. I think that for book 7 I'll go with the printed version if we keep Allyson Ryan as the narrator.
