Historia
Herriot continues the rich and rewarding day-to-day life of a small-town veterinarian, and we journey with him across the dales, meeting a whole new cast of unforgettable characters - humans, dogs, horses, lambs, parakeets - all of them drawn with the same infinite fascination, affection and insight that made James Herriot one of the most beloved authors of our time. And all the stories are warmly, evocatively told by the world-renowned "voice" of Dr. Herriot: Christopher Timothy.

Horrible sound quality, excellent story
Revisado: 03-31-14
James Herriot is one of my favorite authors so the 3 star rating isn't at all because of the quality of the story itself. I also have this book on CD and the audible version has something seriously wrong with the audio. Christopher Timothy's voice is much too deep and slow, to the point that it makes it impossible to listen to this book. Such a shame because it is a wonderful story. Hopefully Audible will fix the sound quality...until then, don't get this one.

Historia
Consumerism is everywhere. It shapes the way we eat, shop, rest, think, love and believe. We can't escape it, but how can we live well in the midst of it? We are daily seduced by a 250 billion dollar marketing machine. But how often do we consider how this might influence us? The current prevailing orthodoxy is that life should be lived to the max. By contrast, Jesus modeled a life of joyful limitation - free to do; free not to do. Consumer Detox, complete with the Detox Diary in the back of the book with suggestions for each chapter, encouraging stories, and space for writing personal reflections....

Interesting but very religious
Revisado: 09-17-12
I have to start by saying that I did not see the "Rev." before the author's name until after I bought this book or I would not have purchased it at all. I was pretty disappointed that this information isn't a little more prominent. So needless to say this book has a decidedly religious slant.
That being said, there are still some very interesting points and thought provoking ideas in this book. I admit that I found myself cringing at the parts when he talks about what the Trinity wants us to do blah blah, but after a while I was able to tune out those bits and listen for the good stuff.
I enjoy books that encourage self examination and a look at the bigger picture that sometimes we all have trouble keeping in focus. This could have been an excellent book but for me it's one I won't listen to more than once. In the end if I had a choice whether or not to purchase it again, I wouldn't.

Historia
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Loved it! Eye opening book.
Revisado: 08-27-12
This book was written very well, scenarios were realistic, story lines weren't prettied up for a fairy-tale ending. My family and I all enjoyed the book; my sons have listened to it many more times than I have.
As a mom I have to admit that at first I felt a rising panic when listening to this story. I felt the need to do...something...right now. But I think that's what the author is trying to accomplish (and the panic subsides into plans for reasonable action).
The reading was great - apart from the whiny voice used for the daughters - but they are more often talked about than actually "speaking". Both the story line and narration move at a good pace and keep you engaged.

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

Don't waste your credit here!!
Revisado: 07-08-12
I very rarely right a bad review, but this book was a misery to listen to. The editor must have been on vacation when Mr. Barry submitted this book. "The Great Influenza" is only one of the MANY topics covered in excruciating detail. The history of Johns Hopkins University, the life stories of pretty much everyone in the field of science that the author has ever read about and/or met....yeah, it's awful. I found myself asking "When are we going to get to the influenza part" so many times! The author tries too hard to impress; the vocabulary and never ending details about the details about the details are unnecessary and make this an impossible book to enjoy. Really need an abridged version.

Historia
The Sweet Potato Queens are back and bawdier than ever in Southern belle extraordinaire Jill Conner Browne’s ninth edition of the hysterical series. Having experienced pretty much ALL of the crappy parts of life, Browne feels it is her duty to render whatever assistance she can to her fellow sufferers - and she does so in her own inimitable fashion.
Her father taught her there are very few situations in life that we really and truly cannot change, and it is up to us to figure out how to either make fun OUT of them - or make fun OF them.

Funny
Revisado: 06-11-12
This book reminded me of sitting around having a good chat with my girlfriends. Very lighthearted for most of the book, with some serious and sad moments in there too. If you are looking for some great insight about life...this is not a book for you. I found it to be a good listen when I needed to take my mind off of more serious things and just laugh for a while. Stories about relationships with men, friends, children & parents, the struggles of getting (slightly) older, money issues...we all can relate and it certainly helps to be able to laugh about this stuff instead of cry. In general I liked the book. It won't be one that I'll be listening to super often, but when I'm looking for a respite from more serious issues I'll be likely to buy another Jill Conner Browne book.

Very enjoyable
Revisado: 06-11-12
This book consists of smaller stories/mysteries that Poirot deals with in an effort to complete the "Labors of Hercules". Some are lighthearted, such as a scam being run by a lady and a pekingese dog and others are more sinister. Agatha Christie's books are generally very entertaining and this one doesn't disappoint. Hugh Fraser does a great job narrating as always, he keeps up a spirited pace and distinguishes the different characters with his voice very well. Books like this make boring chores and commuting much more enjoyable! Well worth a listen.

Surprisingly helpful!
Revisado: 05-14-12
I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book since I wasn't familiar with Steve Harvey's work but I found his reading in the sample clip engaging and decided to give it a try. I actually enjoyed the entire thing and learned quite a lot. He is a wonderful reader; more like having a good chat than reading really. Not everything in the book applies to everyone's life (obviously), but you're sure to find some useful insight here. I found myself laughing out loud listening to this - he is seriously trying to teach women important things but keeps the tone light which makes it a very enjoyable listen.

Nice story, great listen for family time!
Revisado: 05-14-12
This was a very nice story reminiscent of Little House on the Prairie or Anne of Green Gables...just a story of life, family, friends. I was pleased to find something that wasn't about vampires or witches or dragons. My only caveat is that the book is read at a very slow pace, which annoyed us all for the first bit until we really were drawn into the story. I wouldn't skip it because of that though, it's worth getting settled into the pace to enjoy this pleasant book.

I love Stephen Colbert but this was not funny. The best part of the whole thing was the banter between him and Tom Hanks before the book started. Even at less than 2 dollars, this isn't worth it.
