We all want to help students learn to read, but what happens when 67 percent of children don’t get that chance? 2022 National Report Card data shows that is the reality in the United States right now. But it does not have to be this way!

Informative, but very promotional
Revisado: 03-15-25
I appreciated this book and enjoyed getting an explanation of the science of reading that was a bit lighter on the dense academic vocabulary than many other books. This was easy to understated and a quick listen. However, every chapter ended with an encouragement to check out the author's website and post on social media with specific tags and hashtags. The constant self promotion was a bit annoying.

Whether in the home, with children, or in a professional environment—or some combination of all of these—women are cultivating a world of beauty, truth, and hope. But it’s not easy. Good book, annoying narrator
Revisado: 02-23-25
I appreciated the points Chelsea made in this book. Her chapter on sabbath and rest was especially helpful! Unfortunately, I had a hard time getting into this book because of the way it was read aloud. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what was so annoying, but the best way to explain it is that the narrator emphasized many points in an almost fake or condescending way. Although I found Chelsea's writing to be very raw and sincere in Longing for Motherhood, the way it was presented by the narrator in this book, made it sound very superficial and insincere. I truly think this is an issue with the woman reading it, though, and not with the book itself.

Very Vague
Revisado: 04-07-24
I wanted to like this book, but it was very vague. It seemed like Jordan was trying too hard to be applicable to everyone. Even though this book has been advertised as being about her journey and what God taught her through her disappointments, I felt like it just skirted around these things. After 3 and a half chapters, she had mentioned God or the Bible explicitly only about 5 times, and even these were not specifically applied to the situation she was describing. I was hoping for a book with a strong Christian message about Biblically overcoming disappointment. I wanted to like this book so much, but it was not what I was expecting.

Redemptive
Revisado: 03-24-24
Jinger does an excellent job sharing her heart as she reflects on the challenges of growing up under the enslaving principles of IBLP. However, this book is not blasting exposè of her family or the institute. It is a retelling of how God freed her from the self condemnation and fear that had gripped her life due to her upbringing. Her focus redemptive as she draws her readers attention again and again to the truths of scripture and the goodness of God. Such a good read!

Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines.

Raw, Honest, Redemptive
Revisado: 03-24-24
Raw and honest retelling of intimate moments and details in the behind the scenes life of the Duggar family. Jill's story does a great job balancing being real and raw and also being hopeful and redemptive. I will likely listen to this again!
