Besides excellent narration the story definitely is a roller-coaster of a ride. Yes there's a power increase from the first book but it's far from Mary Sue, and our main character is reminded many times that will alone cannot overtake a hierarchy of power.

Ever had a delicious omelette and bit into an egg shell? That's what this series is like. Strong Dresden Files and Monster Hunters International vibes, but written by a fedora wearing neckbeard with whatever the latest "thing" is as their profile pic. There's a good story underneath, and the narrator was great, but every few chapters (and at least one whole novel) you're subjected to shovelful of woke cringe that spoils the whole plot with weirdo wedge issues.

Both story and narrator were excellent. At first when the main character switched in the second book I was a bit purturbed but it began to make sense by the third book that each main character and their personal growth would be entwined by the end.

It had so much potential, contemplating the mental processes of a new artificial being coming to understand the world. Then at every turn, and in many ways the only way in which the plot can move forward, are current political mindsets of a progressive leftist taken to hyperbolic conclusions. Climate change, militant religious hillbillies, and the desire to tear down the American system of government because it does the thing it was designed to do...impede social pendulum swings from destabilizing the laws the nation is built upon.

I wish I could finish the book and find out how it all ends, but I just couldn't keep reading progressive boogeymen and theology taken as fact as the method for advancing the plot. I'd gotten all the way through the first and mostly into the second and just had to stop it permanently because it felt like I was being lectured to by a smug intellectual that doesn't understand sociology or economics.

Really good performance, and was completely hooked on the story...right up until it took an oddly sharp turn into a litany of SJW topics. I went from hotly excited for each next chapter and discovery of magic interactions, to uninterested in a demisexual's nervous fumblings around their own sexuality yet will chide a god for misgendering a trans acquaintance.

Most series tend to drag after a few novels but between the story, and narrator, I am constantly amazed and enthusiastic about each new one in the series!

The author tries so hard to formulate characters and histories for everyone, but at the point where two of the crew members leave is where things just go downhill fast. Everything you knew about the inner workings of the characters all of a sudden flips to bizarro world versions. The narrator does an excellent job with all the voices but I could only get through book 14 before I had to stop because things felt so disjointed and off.

RC Bray is, as usual, an excellent story-teller. The Arisen series, though, falls just a little short of measuring up to the narrator. It's still a good read, just the little eccentricities of time jump that create a twinge in my brain. Most of the series you're with the various protagonists down to the second, and then all of a sudden it's "then they reached the town after twenty miles through zombie land" or "somehow there was a cargo drop". Still recommend it, but the time lapses just felt jarring.

Great premise and the story flows and expands smoothly through the three books. The author really does hit home a dislike for politicians and dishonest authority.

Should have been the real title. If everyone but the main character was all the book was, I'd have given it five stars. Instead you walk along with a hayseed teen that clumsily bungles his way into and out of adventures, relying on his tantrums and feelings to guide him instead of those with vast years of experience that try to help. All I could hear from him was the chant of a five year old "Noooo...I want to do it myself!" over and over.
