Historia
Memories, fears, the fog of nightmares... Five years after a series of Dante-inspired killings stunned Boston, a politician is found in a London park with his neck crushed by an enormous stone device etched with a verse from the Divine Comedy. When other shocking deaths erupt across the city, all in the style of the penances Dante memorialized in Purgatory, poet Christina Rossetti fears her missing brother, the artist and writer Dante Gabriel Rossetti, will be the next victim.

Great narrator, great story
Revisado: 12-11-22
I disagree with the top review on this page. I think the narrator was a great choice and did an excellent job. He is not monotonous, but instead allows the story to take center stage instead of trying to take the spotlight, as many narrators are wont to do. Just because the protagonist is female does not mean the narrator must be, and vice versa. I love this story and this narrator!

funny at first, then racist and transphobic
Revisado: 09-27-22
it’s 2022… we don’t need “jokes” like this. Making fun of indigenous cultures in an insanely racist way, and using “transvestite” and referring to a trans woman as “he”, not a good look. embarrassing.

Amazing until the last third
Revisado: 10-02-21
Why does the point of view shift to the English ambassador Rowe? if I wanted to read a book about English dosdain for other cultures, I would have read any other book. The reason why I loved the last book and this one was because it is a new perspective for me to read about, and so when we begin to see India through the Englishman‘s eyes, it’s just like every single other book that is written from a white man’s perspective. I don’t care about Rowe. I don’t care how much the English people hate India. I don’t care. I’m reading this book to learn about an amazingly powerful female Empress of Mogul India. I am not reading to learn about yet another white man.

Historia
Eli's trip to London with his uncle Harry quickly turns homicidal when the older magician finds himself accused of murder. A second slaying does little to take the spotlight off Harry. Instead it's clear someone is knocking off Harry's elderly peers in bizarrely effective ways. But who? The odd gets odder when the prime suspect appears to be a bitter performer with a grudge who committed suicide over 30 years before. While Eli struggles to prove his uncle's innocence - and keep them both alive - he finds himself embroiled in a battle of his own.

Kind of a fun plot
Revisado: 07-15-21
The plot is fine, a cozy murder mystery like the others in Gaspard’s magician series, but this one feels like it didn’t get the same level of editing scrutiny that the other books did. The characters are two dimensional, and the overall writing is poor.

Historia
Xenocide is the third installment of the Ender series. On Lusitania, Ender found a world where humans and pequeninos and the Hive Queen could all live together; where three very different intelligent species could find common ground at last. Or so he thought. But Lusitania also harbors the descolada, a virus which kills all humans it infects, but which the pequeninos require in order to transform into adults.

Good book, questionable production
Revisado: 04-22-21
I love the Ender series, but there is a lot of questionable - at best - choices at play here. The fake Chinese accents are offensive and racist, though I don’t find fault in the individual narrators but rather the production company. I loved the Hive queen and Human’s voices.

dated and racist
Revisado: 02-13-21
I have loved the other Laurie R King books, and have been excited to get to her more recent books in hopes that some of the clearly dated aspects of her stories would catch up with the times. This one, unfortunately, I will not be completing. The language is racist, the way the reader is introduced to non-white characters is, frankly, appalling. I know it is historical fiction, however, there are many ways to do accurate portrayals of historic time periods without recreating the harmful racists language of the past. Nope, gonna pass.

Getting snowed in at a luxurious, rustic ski chalet high in the French Alps doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world. Especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. Unless that company happens to be eight coworkers…each with something to gain, something to lose, and something to hide.

Good start, lull in the middle, good finish
Revisado: 09-30-20
I think that overall, this is a well-written story line! However, there are times when it feels like the reader is being led a little to directly to the next clue/hint/etc. , and it can get a bit repetitive. The ending was great! My heart is still racing
