I like how Buck wrote the book in a conversational way. Certainly interesting but told without grandstanding and just making clear some things portrayed differently in the Band of Brothers series (Buck never played darts as depicted in "Replacements" and he didn't "crack up" in Bastogne).
His politics appeared hard right leaning but I feel I could have a worthwhile conversation even if we ended up disagreeing.

The author made a thought provoking, well researched and compelling case that bad laws can do more then just be inconvenient.
They can (and do) kill people. How the second amendment can be interpreted and then used to create "stand your ground" laws that allow someone (more often white) to legally shoot someone not just attempting to rob that individual's property but literally chase after and STILL legally shoot to kill.
Voting is just a step. Democrats have to TAKE ACTION when they are the majority in Congress, the Senate or White House to CHANGE BAD LAWS, otherwise the "go vote" is just hollow rhetoric.

The book did a good job of summarizing the Cold War from 1945-1990 but it seemed there was some room within each chapter to add a bit more information.
It was an entertaining read.

I liked how simple yet straight forward the explanations were.
Repeat a lie often and people will believe.
Create different "enemies" to distract what changes or errors are made (or occur) in a democracy with the intent to create an autocracy, one leader for life.
This is the U.S. right now. Just listen as the news stories come out, how they are challenged, and who are the "enemies" of the government.

People can be influenced to believe anything in the online world

I appreciated that the author made clear:
Qanon is a belief based on enough pieces of fact interwoven with gaps in information to influence people to act out of paranoia.
Qs identity is unknown, which was shown to allow people within Qanon to take control, to further influence others who themselves are vulnerable.
Online is a universe with information that can benefit or endanger the user or person in that users life.
With no physical interaction online, people feel that they can say anything or threaten without consequences. Qanon feeds that perception and benefits greatly due to the online physical disconnect. The loudest, most influential thing is your own thoughts with no one physically there to discuss them.
Paranoia is lethal. Misinformation is lethal.

The book did a good job explaining how fascism can quietly work it's way into what we consider acceptable behavior in politics.
There are daily news stories about illegal or undocumented immigrants / workers who inevitably end as the "bad guys"; they "steal jobs", get "free food and something for nothing,"
Those same people are claimed as "stealing our national identity."
Fascism has to have a scapegoat. Someone to focus rage on but that just simplifies a deeper issue in the United States.
We aren't as righteous and respective of other people (their cultures) as we claim when we embrace fascist ideas. We are nothing more then dangerous hypocrites.

I like how Mr. Marshall writes in a way that feels like he's having a conversation with just the reader.
You feel involved with the story of the land not just as dirt but as a home. But as a home that lives and gives to each of us. It's finite. It can be hurt and killed.
You not only understand how a Sioux feels about the land but you think how YOU yourself feel about it.
I never grow tired of reading or hearing any of Mr. Marshall's books. There's always a fresh perspective or thought to be gained. He is a gifted author.

There could be perhaps a few more examples of how democracy in Germany changed over to fascism with a heavy autocratic blend but did well explaining how small changes like eliminating liberal judges through elections and finally using the Reichstag Fire to demand action with absolute control over dissidents or different opinions.
Similar actions are indeed taking place in the U.S. and around the world.

I liked that this is a story of correcting a grave injustice. I hear and read numerous comments about people tired of hearing about systemic racism, that racism has been "conqured" after having a black president.
And of course, the hard fact is that systemic racism is alive and well. It's found ways to change its name and alittle more trickery in how it's applied but the impact is the same.
This book did an excellent job explaining how the highest award for bravery could not be bestowed on a black person. Period!
But fortunately it is a story that a wrong can be corrected and we as a nation can and MUST DO BETTER.

I liked the author's focus on examples, trying together stories around the world to aspects of authoritarianism.
It's important to warn people away from the false impression of security "measures" that appear to make life better....falsely....for those who feel tightened laws on immigration, etc. couldn't affect them.
Authoritarianism eventually affects everyone in its span of control.
