Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

Historia
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough
Revisado: 03-09-24
I believe this audiobook was approximately 40 hours long and when it just finished I was so disappointed that it had to come to an end but not only have I learned so much about the life of this great man and the historical times that he lived in, but the book was so well written and so well narrated that it only added to the pleasure of listening.
I taught American history and I thought I knew everything I needed to know about. Frederick Douglass, but I couldn't have been more wrong. he was a towering figure of the 19th century, he belongs on Mount Rushmore. but a long side of that he was a human being with human frailties. I hope you read this and enjoy it as much as I did.

In July 1995, San Jose Mercury-News reporter Gary Webb found the Big One - the blockbuster story every journalist secretly dreams about - without even looking for it. A simple phone call concerning an unexceptional pending drug trial turned into a massive conspiracy involving the Nicaraguan Contra rebels, L.A. and Bay Area crack cocaine dealers, and the Central Intelligence Agency.

Listening to this was a little challenging because of the vast number of characters who populate this book of recent American history. But it is well worth the effort.

Historia
Environmental devastation and economic chaos have turned America into a land of horrifying depravity. Assault, theft, sexual abuse, slavery, and murder are commonplace. And a zealous, bigoted tyrant has won his way into the White House. Directly opposed is Lauren Olamina, founder of Earthseed - a new faith that teaches "God Is Change". Persecuted for "heathen" beliefs as much as for having a Black female leader, Earthseed's followers face a life-and-death struggle to preserve their vision.

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Why have I not read this book sooner?
Revisado: 01-22-22
I've heard of Octavia Butler, but for reasons I cannot fathom, I have never read anything by her. And if not for a series of coincidences I would not have found this book. But now that I have, I will be reading more by her. I'm not sure that she is everyone's cup of tea, but if you like dystopian science fiction and speculation about where our crazy society is heading, you could do a lot worse than checking this out.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

A friend of mine recommended that I read this book. I thought that I knew enough about the history of racism in our country and that I wouldn't learn much from reading it. But I was wrong.

Historia
In this eloquent and persuasive book, Neil Postman examines the deep and broad effects of television culture on the manner in which we conduct our public affairs, and how "entertainment values" have corrupted the very way we think. As politics, news, religion, education, and commerce are given less and less expression in the form of the printed word, they are rapidly being reshaped to suit the requirements of television.

One of my heroes, Ralph Nader, often uses the aphorism that I quoted in the above headline. Hopefully it applies to listeners (of audio books) as well.
I wish I could encourage everyone, but especially parents or parents to be, to read or listen to this book.

Asimov!
Revisado: 04-14-21
It has been a long time since I finished a book by Isaac Asimov. I wondered if I would enjoy it as much as I had enjoyed his books when I was much younger. As one ages, perspectives change and things that one enjoyed in their youth do not give the same pleasure. Fortunately, reading a book by Isaac Asimov gave me as much pleasure now as when I read my first, 50 years ago.

Historia
The white power movement in America wants a revolution. It has declared all-out war against the federal government and its agents, and has carried out - with military precision - an escalating campaign of terror against the American public. In Bring the War Home, Kathleen Belew gives us the first full history of the movement that consolidated in the 1970s and 1980s around a potent sense of betrayal in the Vietnam War and made tragic headlines in the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building.

I'm sure you've seen optical illusion type puzzles where there is an image that is somehow hidden but eventually you see it. once you've seen it, it's hard to believe that you missed it originally. reading this book is a key to seeing a hidden image that for some reason you never saw before. The White Power Movement is a frightening part of American history.
bringing the war home connects the dots in a way that is both enlightening and frightening. especially after the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol, every American should be aware that that was not an unprecedented nor unexpected events. it wasn't simply a matter of Donald Trump being the president.
