Historia
In 1950s Tehran, seven-year-old Ellie lives in grand comfort until the untimely death of her father, forcing Ellie and her mother to move to a tiny home downtown. Lonely and bearing the brunt of her mother’s endless grievances, Ellie dreams of a friend to alleviate her isolation. Luckily, on the first day of school, she meets Homa, a kind, passionate girl with a brave and irrepressible spirit. Together, the two girls play games, learn to cook in the stone kitchen of Homa’s warm home, wander through the colorful stalls of the Grand Bazaar, and share their ambitions for becoming “lion women.”

What a great book. It makes me so sad that people must live like this and that women are persecuted like they were and still are. It makes me so thankful that I was born and live in the US and have my freedoms! The author of this book was outstanding, and her writing teaches us so much about the customs and people of Tehran. Highly recommend.

Historia
Special Agent Constant Marlowe is in pursuit of “Mr. X,” a key player in organized crime. Her mission is to collar him and flip him into a cooperating witness. The only problem? Marlowe doesn’t know who he is or even what he looks like. It doesn’t help that the trail has led her to a farming community in the nether land of Downstate, those stretches of Illinois where endless fields of late-season corn block the truth…and any sign of coming threat.

Historia
1800s China. Tightly bound feet, or "golden lilies," are the mark of an honorable woman, eclipsing beauty, a rich dowry and even bloodline in the marriage stakes. When Little Flower is sold as a maidservant—a muizai—to Linjing, a daughter of the prominent Fong family, she clings to the hope that one day her golden lilies will lead her out of slavery. Not only does Little Flower have bound feet, uncommon for a muizai, but she is extraordinarily gifted at embroidery, a skill associated with the highest class of a lady.

Such a good story
Revisado: 04-03-25
Such a good story. I started the book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the story was going to go one way, when all of a sudden it took a turn and for the benefit of keeping the reader's attention. I have to say it was beautifully written and would keep the reader's attention throughout trying to determine what would happen. Never did I think it would become a love story, but in the end it was. I have to say it was very good!

What an excellent read
Revisado: 03-13-25
Wow! What an excellent read. I absolutely adore historical fiction, and this book was among the best. It tells the story of a cultured, wealthy young woman whose life took a dramatic turn after her father's death. The book explores themes of love, honor, faith, anger, self-reflection, and unwavering determination to succeed in life. Despite the hardships, Isola constantly strove to improve her circumstances while being kind to those around her. The ending was perfectly fitting for the story. I found this book to be exceptionally well-written and was amazed that it was based on the true story of an extraordinary young woman.

Historia
Nora Noone’s father was many things to many people. To the public he was a self-made titan of industry, whose luxury boutique hotels were among the most coveted destinations in the world. To his three ex-wives, he was a loving yet distant family man who managed to keep his finances—and his families—separate. But, to Nora, he was always a mystery—especially after his suspicious death at his cliffside home.

Good read
Revisado: 11-08-24
Laura Dave writes a good book that will keep the reader's attention throughout, and this book was no exception. The family dynamics were unusual and the siblings were not always likeable, but that's the story line. Intriguing, yes; but just a good read, not great.

Jefrey Archer always writes such good books. I have listened to the entire William Warrick series as well as the Clifton Chronicles and feel like the characters are old friends. This book was no exception. His writing, description of the issues and characters are simply outstanding. This book also shows the interrelationship between the British and the Americans which has stood throughout time, except during the Revolutionary War. I highly recommend not only this book, but the entire series. Thank you, Mr. Archer, for another outstanding book!

Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Definitely a good read!
Revisado: 09-28-24
A unique book with an outstanding plot. You begin the book and think one thing is going to happen, then by the middle of the book, the true plot comes out. The way the characters are created and presented is unique and the historical knowledge of the book makes it interesting. However, when you are a little over half way in, the book really takes off and things happen one after the other, really making the book better than interesting. A definite good read!
