Historia
The Roman Republic is one of the most breathtaking civilizations in world history. Between roughly 500 BCE to the turn of the millennium, a modest city-state developed an innovative system of government and expanded into far-flung territories across Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. This powerful civilization inspired America's founding fathers, gifted us a blueprint for amazing engineering innovations, left a vital trove of myths, and has inspired the human imagination for 2,000 years.

Excellent Introduction and Conclusion
Revisado: 11-18-23
Not only does the writer thoroughly outline the topic at hand, the Roman Republic, he draws parallels to the state of the world today. He centers his thesis around two seemingly simple questions and shows us that the answer holds many layers and interpretations.

Historia
Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, said to be dedicated to Aristotle's son, Nicomachus, is widely regarded as one of the most important works in the history of Western philosophy. Addressing the question of how men should best live, Aristotle's treatise is not a mere philosophical meditation on the subject, but a practical examination that aims to provide a guide for living out its recommendations.

Classic Earns its spot as THE Authority on Ethics
Revisado: 12-21-22
Aristotle systematically goes through almost every sinario one can think of and gives justification as to why one ought to behave in this way or that. In 2500 years there hasn't been a text on Ethics, I can think of that is more thorough. That being said, what it gains in detail, it loses in interest. I found it hard to listen to and it often failed to hold my attention. Pail critism for a work that was written for a vastly different audience in a vastly different time. Glad its over? YES. Worth going through? Double YES.

Historia
Centuries have passed since the last crusader knight laid down his sword, but the Crusades continue to hold sway over our world. Because the Crusades have been so consequential to history, it's essential to understand the context, motivations, and preconditions of these dramatic military campaigns. In doing so, you'll not only get a fresher understanding of the Crusades, you'll discover surprising truths about why (and how) they were fought.

Changed my opinion the most of any TGC to date
Revisado: 08-07-22
I started on board and gun-ho for the crusades, with really just a vague sense of what I would learn was the 3rd crusade. And, came to the end of the course with a very different impression of the crusades: that finished in a very different place from where those who started them (the crusades) intended them to be. The goals were different than the outcomes.
I Learned some interesting things:
a. There are Many Crusades
b. There were side crusades (unsanctioned)
c. There were many VERY important unintended consequences.
And you will have to tune in to find out more about those things and many others.

Historia
Experience the evolution of all of Jewish life during the 10 critical centuries from its rabbinic foundations in late antiquity until the dawn of modernity in the 17th century. During this time, Judaism was forever affected by its encounters with the surrounding social, economic, political, and intellectual environments of both medieval Islam and Christendom. As a result of those encounters, new pathways of philosophical inquiry and religious spirituality would be formed. The Hebrew language would find new ways of artistic expression. And the role of Jews in the life of the surrounding community would be changed forever.

Very Good Course, worth the listen.
Revisado: 05-26-22
I wouldn't put this as one of my first listens. I think getting a broader view of history, which The Great Courses has many good options (Foundations of Western Civilization I), is a prerequisite. Also, if your looking for a course that will take a look at history "from the other side" I also recommend listening to "Turning Points in Middle Eastern History" this looks at Islamic history. Jews dance between these two worlds, so, those 2 courses make good prerequisites.
Part of the challenge of this particular subject matter is that there are just so few historical documents to pull from.
I really appreciate how the presenter attempts to show the continuities, and discontinuities for Jews through this period. However, I feel that the question of "How did Jews impact the course of history?" or "Why was this important?" or "How does this change my view of history?'" or "How does this help me to understand the world we live in today?" or arguably the most important question for history "How does this help me predict the future or help me make decisions going forward?" (Which he does touch on) ... I feel the "SO WHAT?" was a little lacking.
Further, I embarked on the this intellectual voyage because I wanted to know more about one specific author, MOSES MIMONITIES. For my liking there wasn't nearly enough on this thinker, and very likely more time on this author may have ameliorated my above criticisms.
Although, I am being critical I still put this course solidly in the camp of a "WORTH LISTENING TO" course. There is new material here, and (Large C) Christianity’s relationship to its smaller and older brother demonstrate periods of toleration and periods when minorities could have been treated better, and just as importantly the why and how of that.

It can be argued that one simple idea-the concept of freedom-has been the driving force of Western civilization and may be the most influential intellectual force the world has ever known. But what is freedom, exactly? These 36 engaging lectures tell the dramatic story of freedom from ancient Greece to our own day, exploring a concept so close to us we may never have considered it with the thoroughness it deserves.

Horrible
Revisado: 04-14-22
The Great Courses has many other, all better titles. I'm surprised The Great Courses put their name behind and paid this author I can only guess he knows the right people.
He does tell an interesting story and will present the important points in a way that the listener will remember.
That being said you don't even need to know much, if anything about history to see the mistakes in his teachings and logic, for in many lectures he will contradict himself.
Highly Anachronistic, regularly taking terms and phrases and placing them in time periods they don't belong.
Draws up a narrative then find points to support it. As opposed to presenting the fact as unbiasedly as possible, then letting the lister decide. Cherry picking is the norm.
Let me save you the listen. America is Great and All of history supports this fact.

Does God exist? Do we have a soul? Is it possible to make contact with a spiritual realm? How should we respond to the divine? Will life continue beyond death? Most people, whether deeply religious or outright doubters of any spiritual power, have probably pondered these questions for themselves. In fact, the religious impulse is so powerfully pervasive that neuroscience has posed a provocative question: Are our brains wired to worship?

One of the best "Great Courses" courses.
Revisado: 07-11-21
Insightful, objective, respectful to spiritual experiences yet, deeply committed to the scientific method. This course seamlessly brings together two areas of thought that are usually mutually exclusive. Thank you for bridging this gap. At times this course gave me goosebumps and, was always interesting, engaging and stimulating.

Roman statesman and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero wrote on a wide range of subjects, from Greek philosophy to moral duty to friendship. Though he considered philosophy secondary to politics and often used his writings for explicit political ends, his work has nevertheless been widely read for over two thousand years and has influenced everything from the culture of the Renaissance to the ideals of the founding fathers of the United States.

Historia
The intensely personal David Copperfield (widely regarded to be the most autobiographical of the author’s novels) is one of Dickens’ greatest works. We follow David Copperfield from birth and miserable childhood to inevitable tragedies, until he finally finds happiness later in life. Full of some of the most memorable characters in literary history. Nicholas Boulton’s depiction of the oily Uriah Heep and David Copperfield’s sinister stepfather, Murdstone, do the novel full justice.

Masterpiece
Revisado: 05-31-17
It's easy to see why this book is considered a masterpiece. The characters come alive. The humanity of the protagonists shines through. You see how the perspective of David changes with age. I love how Dickens illustrates the relationships between the characters.
A notable theme for me was that hard work pays off, which comes back several times throughout the book. And also loyalty, and strength of character (conviction).
Finally, the narrator really brought this work to light helping to capture the ideas of the author.
