Historia
Since Anabelle’s mother left for Earth to care for her own ailing mother, her days in New Galveston have been spent at school and her nights at her laconic father’s diner with Watson, the family Kitchen Engine and dishwasher, as her only companion. When the Silence came, and communication and shipments from Earth to its colonies on Mars stopped, life seemed stuck in foreboding stasis until the night Silas Mundt and his gang attacked.

A risk that payed off
Revisado: 02-01-24
I picked this one up as a daily deal and was so pleased with it. The narrator Sophie Amoss was simply great to listen to. The book was well written, descriptive word choices, phrases and language was just pleasing to listen to. Those two points combined raised the “overall” rating of the story.

Having finally returned Cal to the seat of his sanctuary, he must cast aside other whims and assume the mantle of Administrator, continuing the diplomacy that came with the creation of Accords. Regardless of agreements, some diplomacy must always be spoken with fists. This one was rough
Revisado: 01-09-24
This one felt slow.. felt like too much administration and teaching based on his past experiences… which I’ve already listened to in each of the past books.

Pros & cons
Revisado: 12-20-23
Pros:
Great concept potential
Jeff Hays as the mimic
Ryan H Reid as the main character
Cons:
While most of these types of stories involve a person in some way or another becoming more powerful than normal in a short period of time.. this one felt ultra rushed. Worse still was it wasn’t from clever or unique uses of available skills.. it was simple acquisition of items and gear almost being thrown at him. Most from very unlikely sources. This also applies to spell acquisition. I didn’t have an issue with acquiring of the spells so much as the power level of the spells.
The mimics hide ability seemed a bit odd in a few points in the story. I won’t go into detail.
And Dorrie Sacks, while she has a lovely voice, there was very little range between characters that she voiced, they could have all been the same character.

Didn’t get bogged down in stat sheets
Revisado: 12-01-22
It was enjoyable and I’m interested to see where the next book goes. I enjoyed the RPG aspect and appreciated how I didn’t have to listen to stat sheet info being read to me over and over like some other similar books have done.
The narrator was good enough that I didn’t hate listening. But felt that he places emphasis in the wrong places at times or not at all when doing so would have made the story one star more enjoyable.

Too much fowl language
Revisado: 06-25-22
I’m not anti fowl language, but it just felt like it was used too much in the less than one hour I listened to before deleting and returning the book. I just never felt like I was going to be able to become interested if invested in the story either.

Historia
Thomas Covenant is a leper, a bitter and solitary pariah who is mystically transported to another Earth where time moves differently than ours, one in which magic takes many forms. The Land is threatened by many evils, the most immediate of which is a maddened Cavewight whose subterranean excavations have unearthed the ancient and puissant Staff of Law. More dangerous to the free people of the Land is the Gray Slayer, Lord Foul, the Despiser, who intends to destroy the actual foundations of the Earth that he might wage war against the universe’s creator.

Depressing Narration
Revisado: 01-25-22
I'm not even sure I'm giving the "story" part the correct number of stars, it probably deserves better. The narrator just came across as so depressed with every character. I couldn't even finish the book. I often found that my thoughts/focus were no where near the story that was playing out in my earbuds because the Narration felt slow and again, depressing. I understood that coming from the main character, but not from every character..
Just my take, I hope its better for everybody else.

Disappointing ending
Revisado: 06-16-20
The new narrator was a disappointing surprise.. yes it’s written on the book.. no I didn’t look for that before purchasing.. and honestly if I had known, I’d still have gotten the book.. Luke had big shoes to fill in my opinion. I even feel like I noticed him improve as the book went on. But he never brought it to the level of the previous narrator.
As for the story, it was just as good as every book before it............ right up till the end.
I won’t spoil it, but I will say that looking at it as an ending to that specific book (with hopes of more to come) it fell a bit flat. In contrast, the previous books all end (if memory serves) on up beat cliffhangers. Looking at it as an ending to the series.. felt worse than game of thrones levels of disappointment.

It got better as it went along
Revisado: 06-16-20
I struggled in the beginning, more my fault I think than anything to do with the book. I just don’t typically like my fantasy set in modern times. So if you feel the same way, maybe consider another book.
That said, it did get easier for me to enjoy as it went along. So much so that I might even give the next book a chance.

Avoid feature in the app?
Revisado: 06-16-20
I’m sorry, I lost interest back in the second book & this was no better.. I only got this because of the “based on your library, we recommend” section.. yes I have previous books and I guess I should have taken the time to review my old ratings/feedback.. but I didn’t, this is a great example of why I wish there was a feature in the app, a tab maybe, to flip to so I could quickly view books I did not like & avoid getting the next in a series.
Armen Taylor, I never feel engaged with the story when listening to him.. I think situationally he has a wonderful voice.
James Hunter/ The Jade Lord: still a good story concept, but the writing lacks a “real or natural” feel to the dialogue. The similes bother me for some reason as well.. I think I may just be being overly critical in this point as a result of not enjoying so much of the rest of the book.. or maybe they are just that bad
