Great story, thought provoking
Revisado: 01-30-24
I really loved this book! it really makes you think about how we live our lives and the connections we forge with people (and animals!). I am happy the author did not force religion on the reader, it was all very secular. Some of the dialogue was cheesy but honestly I am a sucker for it sometimes. The main character is really hard to like at first but stick with it, I promise it will get easier!

Amazing setting and narration
Revisado: 01-13-24
The narrator was excellent, her Portuguese accent was perfect and helped transport me to São Paolo. The story was enchanting, a little slow at first tbh and I felt the main character was unlikeable at times, but I really grew to love each character and was eager to hear how their stories ended!

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs. it was ok
Revisado: 12-20-23
The writing was not amazing, there was a lot of repititious language and at times it felt like certain parts were out of place or awkward, but the concept of the story and the world she created were beautiful and enthralling. The narrator did a good job overall but I found Britta's voice to be insufferable, it made such a strong character seem like a small little girl and it was annoying. The other voices were good though and I never really got confused about who was talking when there was a lot of switching/back and forth.

wonderful story!
Revisado: 11-06-22
So engrossing and such a beautiful story. I loved learning about African mythology along the way as well which is something I had never really heard much about. Now I want to delve deeper into it and learn more! So excited to see there is a sequel because...well...you'll see! Read if you like stories with fantastical themes, gorgeous imagery, a little bit of romance, and a narrator that seamlessly switches between characters like it is nothing.
