good performers, meh story
Revisado: 03-25-20
I knew going into this book that the story wouldn't be super original-- guy meets girl, they fall in love, she rescues her from a bad situation, more kissing, they live happily ever after. It was exactly the kind of story I needed with the stress and anxiety of the current pandemic, so I downloaded and happily listened to the whole story. It was in alternating first person perspective, which isn't my favorite, but I didn't mind it so much. The performers did a great job and were fun to listen to. I was ready to give this a 5/5 comfort food book rating, but then I hit the epilogues.
That's right, epilogues. Plural. more than one.
That's not how epilogues work, first of all. I actually could have dealt with multiple epilogues because whatever, rules are for breaking and the world is on fire and I've got bigger problems. It was the content of the epilogues that got to me and please quit reading my review now to avoid spoilers.
Ren was protective of Lily in the main story and had some serious old fashioned chivalry going on-- he wouldn't let her carry her bag, opened her car door, etc. I thought it was cute. Some guys are just like that.
In the epilogues, though, he gets way more possessive. He yells at a guy for checking Lily out at the campus bookstore. Straight up yells, "Get away from my wife!" and gets growly because a dude checked out his wife. The guy didn't even say anything to Lily, just checked her out. The guy leaves and then Ren chastises Lily for her very normal choice in clothes-- jean shorts, a tanktop, and flip-flops-- saying that of course guys are going to look what is "his" if she dresses like that. Ren then throws Lily over his shoulder (in public) and carries her home.
There were other parts in the epilogues that made me raise an eyebrow-- the way he ignores other women, for example. He won't even have female friends because Lily is "the only girl he sees". In fact, he ignores everyone except for Lily to the point of being incredibly rude.
I get not liking many people other than your SO. My SO and I are both introverts and prefer each other's company over anyone else's, but if we are in a social situation, we still talk to other people of all genders and it's not an issue because we know that as soon as we get home, we're going to take our pants off, cuddle, and decompress. I trust my SO to talk to women that aren't me and vice versa.
Ren's possessive behavior in the main story is fine. Ren's controlling behavior in the epilogues kinda ruined the book for me because now I wonder if Lily left one abusive relationship for another. The epilogues make it sound like he does care about her, but with that kind of controlling behavior, I can't buy that it's really true love and not possession.

Historia
Walk. Scavenge. Destroy. Trade. A simple cycle that's suited Ronin for 185 years. With no clear grasp of his programming, the barren wasteland known as The Dust offers him purpose, a place where his armored undercasing, amped-up processors, and advanced optics can be put to use. The ramshackle towns on the edges of the waste serve merely as resupply stations between increasingly long treks. But one night - one human woman - makes him question everything.

unconventional, touching love story
Revisado: 03-25-20
I absolutely loved this book. I'm also 80% sure it's the author's Fallout 4 fanfic that they altered just enough for legal reasons, but i don't care. In fact, if it's true, that makes this an even more delightful read-- I am still mad you couldn't romance Nick Valentine, and this book helped fill that void a little.
This book was really compelling-- I immediately sympathized with Laura and was intrigued by Ronin and wanted to know where their story would go. The world felt like a breath of fresh air in the romance genre-- I can only read so many historicals about English nobility before I wanna scream. I loved both Ronin and Laura's personal character development and their romance-- the author left no doubt in my mind that these two were meant to be together.
Definitely going to be keeping my eye out for more books by this author :)

Historia
Life's been hard for Zeke. Being a punching bag for his alcoholic father has turned him into stone. Not even the dodgy trailer park he lives in can scare him. Fighting is his release and sex, drugs, and his guitar bring him peace, but deep down Zeke isn't quite as hard as he makes himself out to be. When he meets Patience, she finds all his broken pieces and puts him back together. She's a ray of light in his shadowed life and the last thing he wants to do is bring her into his dark world.

a little too melodramatic for me
Revisado: 01-14-20
it started out really interesting! I liked that Zeke was genuinely an asshole and didn't become a good guy the second he met Patience. I felt like the book got a little too melodramatic for my taste, but overall, I liked this one.

Historia
My name is Cassidy Porter.... My father, Paul Isaac Porter, was convicted 20 years ago for the brutal murder of a dozen innocent girls. Though I was only eight years old at the time, I am aware-every day of my life-that I am his child, his only son. To protect the world from the poison in my veins, I live a quiet life, off the grid, away from humanity. I promised myself, and my mother, not to infect innocent lives with the darkness that swirls within me, waiting to make itself known. It's a promise I would have kept...if Brynn Cadogan hadn't stumbled into my life.

a surprisingly moving love story
Revisado: 01-01-20
I really liked both characters! They were well developed and had believable chemistry. The climax of the book is a little bonkers, but if you've read romance novels before, you'll be prepared.
I absolutely loved Joe Arden's performance! His accent was consistent and really added to Cassidy's character. I don't know accurate it is since I'm from the Midwest and haven't visited New England yet, but I really liked listening to it.
