The Art of Waiting: On Fertility, Medicine, and Motherhood was published six years ago, but there couldn’t be a more pertinent book for this moment—one in which the overturning of Roe has put women’s bodies and their fertility in the center of our national conversation. In this essay collection, Belle Boggs explores cultural narratives surrounding the act of building a family. She renders her own experiences with infertility and her efforts to conceive with vulnerability and nuance. She also incorporates the stories of others—stories that don’t conform to dominant narratives about family building. Her vivid, deeply researched and reported essays invite readers to consider the experiences of individuals and couples who choose infertility treatment, in vitro fertilization, surrogacy, and adoption. I especially appreciate that she includes the experience of LGBTQ and BIPOC couples. Boggs, who writes with great tenderness and precision, is an author worthy of her incredibly important subject. Listening this book, I found myself challenged to consider my own assumptions and deeply ingrained biases. For that, and for all that I learned, I am grateful.

There is so much to love about Sarah Blake’s Clean Air. Part eco-thriller, part supernatural mystery, part domestic novel, the book invites readers into a post-apocalyptic world that feels both richly imagined and entirely familiar.

One of the book’s greatest triumphs is its depictions of motherhood. Blake captures the complexities and contradictions of raising a young child—the mundanity of daily routines, the anxieties of releasing a child into a dangerous world, the humor and surprises and deep love that accompany childrearing. It is so refreshing to see motherhood portrayed in a way that isn’t belittling, sentimental, or unrealistic.

The book is packed with other delights as well—beautiful language and descriptions (it’s no surprise that Blake is also an accomplished poet), inventive forms (Izabel’s unsent letters to her daughter and the murderer are just fabulous), a diverse cast of characters, and some real surprises. The monster posters are pretty great too (you’ll just have to wait and see).

I can’t recommend this literary page-turner highly enough.

This novel is a provocative, vivid, and deeply felt re-imaging of the flood myth. It centers around Namaah, the wife of Noah, who (as women do) inhabits many roles—mother, lover, caretaker, visionary, and midwife. She alone has the courage to question and confront the God who has wiped out most of human and animal life. Thank you, Sarah Blake, for upending a patriarchal canon. Prepare to be transported and transformed by this brave and beautiful work.
