Historia
For decades, the Navy has stood sentinel over crucial waterways, ensuring safe passage of goods from nearly all nations. The result is the longest phase of peace on the waters since the Phoenicians, with rising living standards, more (total) jobs, and the dramatic decline of poverty in Asia. But these prosperous times could be at an end. Today China is building warships at an extraordinary pace. India, Japan, Vietnam, and Europe are responding with more fighting ships. What will result from China’s rising naval might, particularly in the South China Sea?

Historia
The Viking Age - from 750 to 1050 saw an unprecedented expansion of the Scandinavian peoples into the wider world. As traders and raiders, explorers and colonists, they ranged from eastern North America to the Asian steppe. But for centuries, the Vikings have been seen through the eyes of others, distorted to suit the tastes of medieval clerics and Elizabethan playwrights, Victorian imperialists, Nazis, and more. None of these appropriations capture the real Vikings, or the richness and sophistication of their culture.

In this book Price constantly talks about certain sources being unreliable because they were twisting the history to fit the view of the Catholic Church. then he proceeds to twist the history to fit the view of the Church of Woke
But when he's not bending over backwards to work gender identity into the book it's pretty good.

Love this
Revisado: 10-15-23
I’ve listened to the first and now this. Love the characters I feel like I would recognize them if they walked in my door. The mysteries are good and just confusing enough. And I love the author’s reading of his books. He gets (obviously) every joke and there are quite a few laughs. His enthusiasm for the story is contagious. I really have loved listening to these. On to the next!

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Historia
A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Simon Brett's entertaining crime novel, starring Bill Nighy. Charles Paris has been resting for quite a while, so he's relieved when he is cast as Ghost of Hamlet's Father and First Gravedigger in a touring production of Hamlet. But rehearsals are a little tense - the lead roles of Hamlet and Ophelia are played by a reality TV contestant and TV talent show winner respectively, and their opinions on celebrity and the theatre differ somewhat from those of the more experienced members of the cast.

Historia
In The Blank Slate, Steven Pinker, one of the world's leading experts on language and the mind, explores the idea of human nature and its moral, emotional, and political colorings. With characteristic wit, lucidity, and insight, Pinker argues that the dogma that the mind has no innate traits, denies our common humanity and our individual preferences, replaces objective analyses of social problems with feel-good slogans, and distorts our understanding of politics, violence, parenting, and the arts.

Historia
A game of ‘murders’ at Sir Hubert Handesley’s country house party becomes far too realistic for anyone’s liking. First a guest arrives with a dangerously lethal dagger and then, when the gong sounds to announce the start of the game, the victim plays dead in a very convincing manner. Chief Detective Inspector Alleyn believes the unusual dagger is a vital clue to the real-life murder, and soon he’s on the trail of a Russian secret society.

Historia
Towards the end of the 19th century and for the first few years of the 20th, a strange invasion took place in Britain. The citadel of power, privilege, and breeding in which the titled, land-owning governing class had barricaded itself for so long was breached. The incomers were a group of young women who, 50 years earlier, would have been looked on as the alien denizens of another world - the New World, to be precise. From 1874 - the year that Jennie Jerome, the first known "Dollar Princess", married Randolph Churchill - to 1905, dozens of young American heiresses married into the British peerage....

Very interesting and well read!
Revisado: 09-01-18
I enjoyed this book. There were many fascinating stories about people in the Gilded Age and how the very rich lived and thought. Really interesting.
My only complaint is the repetition of information. Many times I thought, “you told me this already!” So I guess a little tighter editing would have been good. That being said, I really enjoyed this. The quotes and references were evidence of the extensive research, which I think made the book so good. The narrator is excellent, her somewhat posh accent is perfect for this book.

Another Ann Cleeves winner!!
Revisado: 01-12-18
I may be obsessively listening to Ann Cleeves books on Audible lately but that's because they are so good! This is another great listen. The narrator is essentially perfect and the story is terrific. The characters and place are so well drawn out hat they feel real, like people I've met and a place I've just come back from. (In reality - a place she makes me want to go to!). So happy with the whole thing!!
