it was a good book though I wouldn't read it again necessarily. the last 1/2 was great and really highlighted her accomplishments and the importance of thinking outside the box. the begging was slow and the writer came off as judgy. though I recognize she is from a different generation.

this book was a thorough account of the West's development and crimes. It leaves and encourages some reflection on how these two people became the monsters they were. Not simply relying on statements that they were evil. while a good listen I don't think I will run through it soon. the descriptions of violence against women and children is graphic without being obscene for the sake of shock value. The book recounts the horror that the West's victims experienced. It also provides the always sought, where are they now? sometimes true crime addicts are always wondering.

TL;DR
Great book but be mindful you will be hearing graphic accounts of sexual abuse, incest, rape, domestic violence, and murder.

The book was somewhat informative though was fixated on a few different stories in a way that did not add to the content. There were some great opportunities for cultural education that was missed. the author spent a significant amount of time pontificating on his own spiritual practice though was dismissive of the practices of other cultures. At times he was needlessly crude for what felt like shock value.
Ultimately, started off good and then went downhill.

the content was genuine and gave me a better understanding of the author and arpatheis south Africa. There were numerous stories and tidbits of information. Trevor did a wonderful job of explaining apartheid and both his anecdotal experience and the systemic issues. Trevor's story is one of violence, oppression and the value of a robust inner resilience. It is also the story of a mother's love and wish for her son to live a better life than she did. While I am happy to have heard this book I don't think I would listen to it again.

I loved the content of the book. It was slow to take off but we all know it takes the Oregon trail time to be interesting. The tale of Sara and her companions is heartbreaking. The book is peppered with research and assorted anecdotes that she'd light into the reality of what happened. whatever you think you know it's only half the truth. it's a slow narration that can take getting used to. It gets better and the content is something you can sink your teeth into. Especially once the cannibalism starts. I didn't know you could do that with ox hides.
