What a steaming pile of phony mea culpa baloney. Let me do you a favor and give you the thumbnail synopsis: Michael Cohen is an amoral douchebag who was swept up in Donald Trump's wake because he admired all of Trumps most appalling qualities.

This book is nothing but a pathetic attempt at payback. Yes, Cohen knows where a lot of bodies are buried, but so what? Does he actually think it's news to the American people that Donald Trump is a vicious, amoral, malignant narcissist?

Cohen swings back and forth in this narrative, simultaneously reliving his Trump glory days, while also spewing a weak-sauce admission of the error of his ways.

It's quite obvious that Michael Cohen regrets one thing: That his beloved demigod, Trump, didn't hesitate to throw him to the wolves when it was expedient.

As the old saying goes, if you lay down with dogs, you get up with fleas. How's that working out for you now Michael?

For quite a while while listening to this book, I was taken in by the caliber of story, particularly considering the fact that it was written in 1954. Not that there weren't plenty of wonderful books written in the 1950s, of course, but in the horror genre, books tended to be somewhat more lurid and less literary.

Creative storytelling notwithstanding, in the latter 2/3 of rhis book the overt misogyny of the era made a bold appearance. As soon as the main character meets a woman, the internal narrative of the male character becomes a laundry list of misogynistic attitudes about women in general and the female character specifically. This included the offhand observation that under other circumstances he probably would have raped her, because, you know...MAN NEEDS.

The taint of sexism made me sad, because I'd enjoyed the story up until that point. I don't expect a 1950s book to be written with the sensibilities of the 21st century, but it sure took the shine off an otherwise great yarn.

Have to say, too, that the narrator was oftentimes over-the-top. He has a great voice, but there was so much that he chose to narrate as rage-filled shouting, and his attempt at a adult female voice was cartoonish , distracting, and laughable.

This isn't the story portrayed in the Will Smith movie. Reader beware.

It's been a long time since I fell head-over-heels in love with a story from the very first page, but I really did with this book. It was wonderfully funny one moment and deeply moving the next. These are characters that burst off the page fully formed. Their flaws are all too human, and the little mysteries between them never feel forced or contrived.

Jenna Lamia's narration (The Secret Life of Bees) is perfection.

Do yourself a huge favor and read this book!

What begins as a familiar tale of guys sitting around shooting the breeze soon takes an unexpected dark turn. There was definitely a Shirley Jackson feel, ala The Lottery, or one of Stephen King's short tales that begin as one thing and end as something dark and different.

From Ireland to America: More from Frank McCourt

Any additional comments?

There is nothing like the audio versions of McCourt's memoirs, all of them read by the author. What could be more enticing than getting an answer to the reader's most compelling question: WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? In 'Tis, McCourt brings his young adult years in New York vividly to life: His struggle to survive working class poverty, loneliness, chronic health problems, and his deep, driving desire to have the education he had always longed for.

If you haven't listened to 'Tis, do yourself a favor and go for it. Also highly recommended are his audio narration of Angela's Ashes and Teacher Man.

Frank McCourt was a wonderful writer and is greatly missed.

Gone Girl: Buckle Up!

Any additional comments?

Somehow I had never heard of Gillian Flynn and chose Gone Girl on a whim. Wow! I was delighted with the surprise turn this novel takes. I'm not the biggest fan of unexpected plot twists--they are difficult to do well and often come across as gratuitous or desperate. I didn't see it coming and was definitely snookered, in the best way possible. Flynn weaves her narrative turn into the fabric of the story like a master and loses not a whisper of momentum as the story rushes to its intriguing conclusion.

I went on to (happily) read Flynn's other novels and am now officially a fan, waiting as patiently as I can for whatever she writes next.

The Tortilla Curtain: Sadly, a Timeless Theme

Any additional comments?

TC Boyle is a master at demonstrating the pathos and struggle of everyday life. The Tortilla Curtain is definitely an unvarnished look at the great gulf between the haves and the have-nots. Despite Boyle having written this book nearly 20 years ago, the story is perhaps even more pertinent in 2013. The narrative is compelling in the way a Steinbeck story compels--one hopes against hope for some bright outcome, despite all signs pointing to tragedy. The narration is a seamless fit with the author's work.
