Historia
Morocco, 1941. With France having fallen to Nazi occupation, twelve-year-old Josie has fled with her family to Casablanca, where they await safe passage to America. Life here is as intense as the sun, every sight, smell and sound overwhelming to the senses in a city filled with extraordinary characters. It’s a world away from the trouble back home—and Josie loves it. Seventy years later, another new arrival in the intoxicating port city, Zoe, is struggling—with her marriage, her baby daughter and her new life as an expat in an unfamiliar place.

A Glorious Story
Revisado: 03-31-25
In preparing for a two-week trip to Morocco, I chose this book to prepare myself to better understand the culture I would be entering. Little did I know the treasures and beauty that would be presented, along with a rich historical account. As a quilter, I was delighted to find a storyline associated with the rich symbolism of quilts. The narrator’s voice was perfect, the story engaging and the philosophy illuminating. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. Feeling very grateful to have encountered it.

The Narrator Nearly Ruined It
Revisado: 02-01-25
The narrator should have had more preparation on correct pronunciation of at least a FEW KEY words, like the name Olivares, a central name that ran through the narrative. Each time she said “Ah-liv-air-us,” I found myself saying the correct pronunciation out loud . For the past 23 years I’ve been a docent at a museum housing one of the biggest collections of Spanish art outside the Prado Museum and the wholesale slaughter of the language grated on me. Even English words were frequently mispronounced. However, the story itself was enough to keep me going. I enjoyed reliving my times in Madrid and Seville chasing after art, and look forward to going further research on Velazquez’ later works. With a different narrator I’d have given this book a higher rating.

Historia
This ambitious, electrifying work traces the harrowing journey of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, a beautifully illuminated Hebrew manuscript created in 15th-century Spain. When it falls to Hanna Heath, an Australian rare-book expert, to conserve this priceless work, the series of tiny artifacts she discovers in its ancient binding—an insect wing fragment, wine stains, salt crystals, a white hair—only begin to unlock its deep mysteries.

Great story, narration sketchy
Revisado: 08-31-23
This was a fabulous story. Very well written, and took us through the centuries in a magical and heartrending read. I’m sure the narrator worked hard on creating all those accents, but unfortunately was in over her head.

Historia
We have all seen, whether live, in photographs or on postcards, some of Claude Monet's legendary water lily paintings. They are in museums all over the world and are among the most beloved works of art of the past century. Yet, ironically, these soothing images were created amid terrible personal turmoil and sadness.

Comprehensive but Painful to Listen
Revisado: 09-18-19
The book is clearly well researched and provides uncommon insights into the life of a remarkable artist. Because of that, I kept listening, though I felt my ears would bleed from the horrendous slaughter of the French language by the narrator. When a story is so filled with words of a foreign tongue, it should be narrated by someone conversant with pronunciation in that language. I know the narrator made the effort, but, oh là là! I need to recover from the hours of continuous assault upon the most beautiful language in the world!

West with the Night is the story of a remarkable woman molded and shaped by many things: the African jungle, a certain dog, horses, airplanes, friendships with white men and black. There is no life, no story quite like it.

Revisado: 08-20-19
I am absolutely stunned at the grand performance of the narrator. I felt like I was at the theater witnessing a world class actress ply her trade. This is a wonderful story told with heart and enthusiasm. I am thrilled to have been able to listen to this fine book!

I’m embarrassed to have even listened
Revisado: 11-10-18
What a piece of prurient trash. Better to spend your time listening to some real literature. And the narrator could take some lessons on pronunciation. I don’t usually give negative reviews but please don’t waste your money on this.

Monsieur Perdu calls himself a literary apothecary. From his floating bookstore in a barge on the Seine, he prescribes novels for the hardships of life. Using his intuitive feel for the exact book a reader needs, Perdu mends broken hearts and souls. The only person he can't seem to heal through literature is himself; he's still haunted by heartbreak after his great love disappeared. She left him with only a letter, which he has never opened.

Sappy to the max
Revisado: 08-14-18
I was so disappointed in this novel. The author seems to want to tap into every sappy theme possible. Despite the occasional bright spots of incisive writing, the book left me feeling manipulated to the max. The only
reason I finished it was because I started it.

A Good Enough Story
Revisado: 05-27-18
This was a good enough story that I finished it in spite of the narrator’s overly emotive voice. I found myself hampered from the appreciating the full impact of the book due to the sappiness of delivery.
