Historia
Overworked and underappreciated, single mom Amy Byler needs a break. So when the guilt-ridden husband who abandoned her shows up and offers to take care of their kids for the summer, she accepts his offer and escapes rural Pennsylvania for New York City. Usually grounded and mild mannered, Amy finally lets her hair down in the city that never sleeps. She discovers a life filled with culture, sophistication, and - with a little encouragement from her friends - a few blind dates.

Sorry I took the time
Revisado: 06-28-21
In all fairness, this is not my favorite genre. "Let's have a pity party because I am a mother". Wah wah wah.
I have listened to Amy McFadden's narration in the past and find her voice and inflection to be completely annoying.
My advise: Unless you are a self-indulgent brat, don't bother.

Historia
Ten years ago, Claire Hines lost her unborn child - and her short-term memory - following a heartrending tragedy. With notebooks, calendars, to-do lists, fractured pieces of the past, and her father’s support, Claire makes it through each day, hour by hour, with relative confidence. She also has a close-knit community of friends in the remote Alaskan town where she teaches guitar to the local children. It’s there, in the reminders. As determined as Claire is to regain all that’s disappeared, she’d prefer to live without some memories of her before life.

Very strong storyline
Revisado: 12-23-20
Audible needs to allow a 10-point rating system. While this is not a 5-star (only my favorite books of all time are rated a 5), it is also more than a 4. The strength in this book lies with an incredibly creative storyline. The author then weaves the many threads of this story together in a manner similar to that of a champion chess player - each move thought out all the way through to the end. Fascinating premise, vey well done.

I wish Audible allowed for a 10-star rating scale!
Revisado: 12-20-20
This would be a 9
PRO: I absolutely loved the creativity of the story line.
CON: Since written in first person, it made the protagonist sound a bit full of herself which became annoying.
The narrator, while not bad, had a flat tone to her voice

It could have been 5 stars
Revisado: 11-08-20
This book had me enthralled for the first three quarters but then petered out. The story just sort of faded away with no difinitive ending. I was disappointed as it had started out showing promise of being an outstanding story. Cassandra Campbell was excellent, as always.

What a GREAT book!
Revisado: 10-14-20
I had read Yellow Crocus several years ago and had loved it. For some reason I had not started Mustard Seed yet. A long car ride just gave me the perfect opportunity. I was so immersed in this story that the 12 hours in the car flew by. Bahni Turpin's narration is exceptional. I can't say enough positive things about this book! I am going to start Golden Poppies today.

Historia
We live in a place everyone calls paradise. Sure, Kauai’s beautiful, with empty beaches, drip-castle mountains, and perfect surf...but we’ve been "camping" for six months, eating boiled chicken feed for breakfast, and wearing camouflage clothes so no one sees us trespassing in our jungle hideout. The cockroaches leave rainbow colors all over everything from eating the crayons we left outside the tent, and now a tractor is coming to scrape our camp into the river. Standing in front of the tent in my nightgown, I know my own truth: I just want to be normal.

Story didn't make annoying narration worthwhile
Revisado: 10-08-20
When I saw that this memoir was likened to The Glass Castle, I was sold. Sadly, the story wasn't all that interesting. But the narration put the nails on the casket. As one reviewer stated, when the narrator was using the voice of another character, there was an echoing 'out of context' tone. Horrible! Nails on a chalkboard - so irritating! When the narration for a book is so disappointing, it makes me wonder if I am fairly judging the actual book itself. The poor narration took control of the whole Audible experience.

Stay with it
Revisado: 06-16-20
Halfway through this book I would have guessed that I would have given it 3 stars by the time I was finished. It was interesting, but not captivating. I did not anticipate how much better this book would get. Too often the opposite is true. We will get pulled into a creative story line and a book will show so much potential, only to disappoint. This is not the case with Stories We Never Told. Stay with it... you will be glad you did.

Wonderful book
Revisado: 05-18-20
For such a sad story line, it did not feel maudlin in the least. The author created interesting characters and presented them with a depth that made them believable. The story was written beautifully, I was pulled into the story completely, listening at every opportunity. I highly recommend the book. I purchased it despite a level of skepticism. I had read No Ordinary Life, also by Suzanne Redfearn, which I did not care for at all. Lesson learned: You cannot discount an author due to one disappointment. I would have really hated to have missed this book!!

Markie, a fortysomething divorcée who has suffered a humiliating and very public fall from marital, financial, and professional grace, moves, along with her teenage son, Jesse, to a new town, hoping to lick her wounds in private. But Markie and Jesse are unable to escape the attention of their new neighbor Mrs. Saint, an irascible, elderly New European woman who takes it upon herself, along with her ragtag group of "defectives," to identify and fix the flaws in those around her, whether they want her to or not.

The book cover is misleading
Revisado: 01-02-20
In retrospect it is kind of odd that I purchased this book to begin with. From the appearance of the book cover I had expectations of a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek book, with a hardy-har-har type of humor ~ which is not my normal choice. I would guess that there are others that did not buy this book because of the misleading cover.
As for the actual book, the narrator is the primary character, Markie. She (Markie) spends a large portion of the book complaining and seeing all glasses as suspiciously half-full. This gets tiresome.
The redeeming portion of the book is the last several chapters, where everything comes together and is revealed. Although not a 'storybook' ending, it is mostly upbeat and with a positive message.
I wish that Audible had a 10-star rating system rather than 5. This book would have fallen in around a 7.

The end justified the means
Revisado: 09-14-19
If you are like me, and find the negativity of others exhausting, you may not listen to this whole book. Several times I came very close to stopping the book because I seriously doubted I could handle waiting for the negativity to just stop already! It was the high ratings and positive reviews of other listeners that gave me just enough hope to keep on going. The narrator was so good at using exactly the tone that the author intended, that the depression experienced by the main character was palpable. So, you may be wondering if the review you are reading is correctly matched to the number of stars used for the rating. I'm not sure I can explain it myself. But when the character's suffering, and therefore my suffering, finally eased, the relief I felt actually provided a kind of pleasure. Additionally, there was a poignant message effectively being conveyed. If I were to have rated this book 1/3 of the way through. I probably would have given 2 stars all round. But the last third brought it around to sufficiently warrant the 4 stars. The narrator, who so adeptly sounded down-trodden and depressed, was ultimately very effective at performing precisely the part she was given.
