Dennis E. Taylor, author of the best-selling Bobiverse trilogy, explores a whole different, darker world in this sci-fi stand-alone. Determined to give his wife and children a better life back home, Ivan Pritchard ventures to the edge of known space to join the crew of the Mad Astra as an asteroid miner. He's prepared for hard work and loneliness—but not the unthinkable. After coming into contact with a mysterious alien substance, Pritchard finds an unwelcome entity sharing his mind, and a disturbing physical transformation taking place.

Brilliant!
Revisado: 02-21-21
I saw the reviews for this book and they are not helpful. I'm sure that if they read Bradbury forty years ago, they'd have said the same stuff. This book is a brilliant and creative idea, well executed. It is not just another wannabe Tom Cruise movie, and that's what many readers must have wanted. It's as if Dennis Taylor thought out exactly what the consequences are of humanity becoming "intelligent", and planned a story around it. What will happen when our tech and knowledge reach a tipping point? I cared for the characters in this book, but their loves, friendships, and aspirations are not the point. It is creative, unlike any other modern book, in its realism and philosophic questioning. How will we find E.T. and what will it mean if we do? The Bobiverse is just a funny "lost-in-space" sort of take on AI. The Singularity is a book that raises the whole science fiction genre, like Brave New World or 1000 Leagues Under the Sea. So, if you like books that combine reality with advanced scientific ideas, you'll like this book.

Historia
2016 Pulitzer Prize-winning memoirist of Barbarian Days William Finnegan had devoted his days to chasing waves as a lifelong surfer. When his adolescent daughter, Mollie, proves to be a natural-born climber, Finnegan follows his newfound passion toward rock climbing. It’s an arduous apprenticeship, and it turns the parent-child dynamic on its head, as Mollie slips into the role of coach and mentor, while her father has to push his limits to keep pace.

Short, pleasant, moving, interesting.
Revisado: 01-04-21
This isn't really about climbing, so much as it is about a father's feelings for his daughter as she grows into a woman. Although short, it is timeless and important. I love the tension in the basic metaphor--as the reader and Mr. Finnegan are filled with worry and fear as Mollie climbs more and more dangerous cliffs, so all fathers fear as their daughters grow and face the world. How fathers deal with this control/fear is the subject of the book.

Historia
Sean was just waiting for his best friend to show up at the bar so they could play some pool. It came as a shock when the tall blonde man accosted Sean and demanded that he change seats. His refusal would change his life. When the fight ended, Sean found himself in the strangest meeting of his life. Odin, Archangel Michael, Lucifer, and Morrigan all vied for his soul, each offering different deals. Sean had to choose, so he chose to go with the goddess of Fate, Death, and Battle.

Really fun and even dare I say a good book!
Revisado: 01-04-21
Although I'm not a real fan of world-building, Schinhofen only forced me to learn new stuff when it actually became relevant for the story. His characters, animals, magic, and new civilization are creative and interesting. This is top-notch in the silly fantasy-with-sex genre! Of course, Parsneau is unbelievably good at whatever it is she does. I'm not entirely sure if she reads the books or creates the characters with her creative and sexy voices and accents. Superb!

Historia
Reports to write, forms to fill, coffee to drink, leads to run down. Gus’s life was a tedium and boredom he’d grown comfortable with. One that he sought out after he’d come back from his tour of duty. A detective in the paranormal investigations department. A job he could work day in and day out in relative peace. One cold and forgotten cup of coffee at a time. It was an environment that made some sense to him. At least in comparison to civilian life where almost nothing did. On top of that, it gave him a chance to hide what he was from the rest of the world.

THIS is the Arand/Parsneau universe...
Revisado: 01-04-21
Although this world has many interesting aspects, this book contains what brings me back to his writing and her performances. It's world-altering at its best. Meaning that I am not really fond of "world-creating" books, because it's too much work for me to learn a new world, so, like "Harry Potter" for adults, Arand adapts our "real" world for his stories, adding magic etc. This is the best of this particular fun/sexy/magic genre (for men, anyway).

Historia
Britt-Marie can't stand mess. She eats dinner at precisely the right time and starts her day at six in the morning because only lunatics wake up later than that. And she is not passive-aggressive. Not in the least. It's just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention. But at 63, Britt-Marie has had enough. She finally walks out on her loveless 40-year marriage and finds a job in the only place she can: Borg, a small, derelict town devastated by the financial crisis.

Similar to "Ove" .... and just as good!
Revisado: 01-04-21
Although it's similar to "A man called Ove" in some ways, it's completely different in others. Perhaps it's a "coming of age" book for someone who's already "of age". It also says more about a place and a time period than "Ove" did. Anyway, thoroughly well-told and interesting!

Historia
Here is an explosive book that takes us, for the first time, deep inside a shadowy, fascinating, and surreal world of unscrupulous doctors, anything-goes team directors, and athletes so relentlessly driven to succeed that they would do anything—and take any risk, physical, mental, or moral—to gain the edge they needed to win. The Secret Race is a riveting, courageous act of witness from a man who is as determined to reveal the hard truth about his sport as he once was to win the Tour de France.

A relevant and extraordinary tale, well-told!
Revisado: 01-04-21
This book digs into the background and the foreground. It tells the Lance story and the Tyler story with incredible insider's insight. Despite its non-fiction genre, it is exciting and suspenseful. I found myself constantly awestruck at the authors' insight into competition and psychology. A must-read for any one with opinions or interest in high-level endurance sports.

Revisado: 01-04-21
The story makes no sense, the characters are silly, there isn't much sex, but the performance is quite good and the story is so silly it's relaxing to listen to. I listen to this stuff to relax, and this was ok. About the same level as "Making monster girls for science"....

Historia
It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east. Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king. Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns. In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined.

Revisado: 01-04-21
I loved "Pillars" and liked "World"--this book is in the middle between them. Lots of good economic history, interesting characters. It's sort of like Edward Rutherford's Sarum, only with less detailed plot and better characters. I'd say this is Follet's second-best book.

Revisado: 01-04-21
I had low expectations, but the general idea of the book was fun and the characters were entertaining. I will buy the next one when it comes out. There's less sex than predicted, and a bit more details about how the main character fights groups of goblins, but Jessica Threet is a treat.
