Historia
Joan Crawford's remarkable forty-five-year motion picture career is one of the industry's longest. Signing her first contract in 1925, she was crowned an MGM star four years later and by the mid-1930s was the most popular actress in America. In the early 1940s, Crawford's risky decision to move to Warner Bros. was rewarded with an Oscar for Mildred Pierce. This triumph launched a series of film noir classics. She teamed with rival Bette Davis in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, proving that Crawford, whose career had begun by defining big-screen glamor, had matured into a dramatic actress.

What a waste of an opportunity *sigh*
Revisado: 11-23-24
For series stalwarts even a lousy book is a 5 star. To be surrounded by these characters even with a boring story is still more entertaining than all cozy mysteries. I’m sure I’ll start to like after a few more listens.
****spoilers****
What a waste of Mrs. Simpsons, Fig, Queenie, Claire even Binky. This had so much opportunity. At least fold in the story from Hollywood from a few books back. Georgie is still solid but all the characters are missing something. Maybe it’s Ainsley? Ainsley is horribly dull. All the books spent there suffer. They need a new location for book 19. A trip, a party with Belinda, ZsuZsu, the Kent’s, the new Royals. I liked the intro to Agatha Christie in book 17. Travel with her.
I liked the concern for Claire being in Germany, the meeting with Queen Mary and baby James. Not much else. At least they tried to jam in so many characters.
I see how this book was necessary for the chronology and abdication. I just expected so much more given the great setup. The Hollywood story might as well never happened. Also, why not just save Claire for 19. A few pages of Claire and Sir Hubert do not make enough fun.
I’d still listen and rate any of this series a 5 star.

She was beautiful, talented, irascible, ruthless, vulnerable, and a true Hollywood legend. From abused child to dance-hall entertainer to silent-film actress, she went on to become one of Hollywood's screen goddesses with films such as Possessed opposite Clark Gable, with whom she began a torrid off-screen affair, Grand Hotel, and Mildred Pierce, her Academy Award-winning film.

I’ll listen to any bio of Joan’s but there’s been much better bios since this was written. The best part was Douglas Fairbanks Jr. interview.
This book should be taken with a grain of salt. It’s Joan directing Chandler’s typewriter. Yikes the narrator. Every time she said Joseph Mankiewicz name it was like nails on chalkboard.
RIP Joan

But she has plenty to occupy her: Her new chef, Pierre, has arrived from Paris, and Sir Hubert, who owns Eynsleigh, is back from his latest expedition. It's time for Georgie to throw her first house party to celebrate his return and show off her new chef. The dinner party is a smashing success. Sir Mortimer Mordred—famous author of creepy Gothic horror novels—is one of the guests. He recently purchased a nearby Elizabethan manor nearby because it has a famous poison garden.

This one was a filler snoozer except for the last hour. Even a filler to the series is still better than 99% of other cozy mysteries. Was it just me or are character names being reused? Maybe it’s Rhys being cheeky. Anyway, I eagerly await next year’s addition to the series.
Congrats to Georgie and Darcy!

I saw the nearly 50 hrs run time and had to check it out. C’mon can anyone but Streisand speak for 50 hrs about herself.
The details are extraordinary. I’m mid way through but the early parts set in NYC are sublime. I’m not a huge fan and I’m loving it. If you’re a true fan it’s a must. If you’re a fan of Hollywood autobiographies definitely try. If you’re even interested in Streisand do ourself a favor.

Historia
In the spring of 1903, locomotive 311, known as the Majestic, carried more than one hundred passengers toward a tunnel through the underbelly of the Canadian Rockies. But then the mouth of the tunnel swallowed the 311 whole, and the train—and everyone on it—was never seen again. Seven years later, a gang of cattle thieves and cutthroats wait on horseback for a train car full of railway cash—a payroll they intend to steal. What they will discover, however, is that the approaching train isn’t the 5409. It’s the missing 311, a train only whispered about around dying campfires.

Revisado: 10-11-23
At least I got this one on sale. It’s too many characters. Too many monsters. No direction. No protagonist to root for. I’d rather have listened to the regular train robbery.
Hard pass if you’re looking for something unique, actually scary and cerebral.

Love this. Great story. Part mystery. Part Pygmalion feeling. Great characters all with good chemistry. I didn’t expect so much religious themes but it was important to the story. Definitely recommend.
